Rooster Teeth Shuttering
Rooster Teeth is shutting down after 21 years
Man, such a huge part of the gaming and entertainment community is closing its doors. They've had a lot of controversy over the past few years and membership/viewership was slipping fast but I never thought I'd see them completely shut down like this. Granted, I don't follow the news very closely and I had no idea that they were actually owned by Warner - Discovery so seeing as how they are shucking property left and right this probably comes as no surprise to a lot of people.
I haven't really followed any of their content since the whole Ryan Haywood scandal but my wife and I do follow Tales From the Stinky Dragon and 30 Morbid Minutes podcasts so we'll see if those will live on via some other venue.
I'm going to have to go back and rewatch all of their Red vs Blue and GTA5 Let's Plays. So much hilarity and history.

Re: Rooster Teeth Shuttering
I thought at least someone would comment on this news.
I know there has to be at least one or two Red vs Blue fans here.
Or maybe this comes as a surprise to nobody and nothing remains to be said about it.

It's a piece of history that's shuttering, but I'll be honest - I haven't watched any of their stuff in well over a decade. I tried some Red vs Blue way back when, but it didn't really click for me.

One of the first big YouTube gaming video companies. They rose to fame with Red vs Blue (a Halo-themed comedy bit), then just kept growing from there.

Re: Rooster Teeth Shuttering
I watched a little Red vs Blue when it first started, but I can't say that I'm familiar without anything else that they've done...at least not enough to even know the name of their company. I'm sure someone will miss their work, and it's a shame the people involved have lost their jobs.

I have also watched a few of those. Achievement Hunter and Slo Mo Guys stand out. RT was pretty prominent in gaming entertainment for a while, and were one of the first trailblazers on YouTube (although it actually predated YouTube by a couple of years - they've been in the gaming video business since OO was still Gone Gold.)
I'm honestly surprised that so few people here remember them. (And that so many people are going out of their way to emphasize their disdain. When did everybody turn into curmudgeons?)

Not familiar with them, but I thought they were maybe a game developer studio given the hoopla.

I would characterize the behaviour as bizarro-hipster rather than curmudgeonly, but either way it is somewhat off-putting.

Re: Rooster Teeth Shuttering
FWIW, the GIF I posted above was intended to convey apathy as opposed to disdain.
Because much like you, I dimly recall watching a smidgen of Red vs. Blue at some point in time many years ago. But it simply wasn't my cuppa. Beyond that, I'm not familiar with any of the other content Brian mentioned. So I do empathise for those involved now seeking new employment, but for the rest of us who are otherwise largely unaware of their content? Realistically, this tale holds about as much weight and relevance as a feather in a hurricane, hence my tongue-in-cheek expression of apathy.

If Warner doesn't allow some of these groups to move to a different studio, it will be a travesty. And if you kill RWBY and piss off the anime nerds, not angel or devil on this realm can help you.Brian wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 7:40 am I mean, they had a pretty big footprint:

I'll be honest, I didn't click on this thread at first because I thought it was seeking advice about some issue with male chickens.
I've never heard of Rooster Teeth or any of the listed YouTube channels and podcats.

I clicked because the thread title "Rooster Teeth Shuttering" was such an odd collection of words.
Even after explaining their many ventures, I may have only heard of one or two of them. But YouTube gaming and animation isn't really my jam.

I have never really understood why people who don't care about a thing feel the need to point that out in a discussion by people who care enough to create a thread about it.
Kind of like the way I don't go into the "Famous coach died!" threads and point out that I don't care, because I don't like football.

I didn't post out of distain but out of a sense that it felt funny to have no idea about any of the listed things. Most of the time I feel like I have similar cultural touchstones as the rest of you other than obscure metal bands and even then I've normally heard of them.

Re: Rooster Teeth Shuttering
Disdain? I didn't see that.
As for my own posts, I was just having fun with the idea that "no one"* remembered what Brian experienced. It was becoming just a joke that I sorta felt Brian was 'in on' and almost framed up. If I made them feel like their interests were unworthy of our attention, that was not my intent.
*an exaggeration

Mmmm. Nope.
But it's fine, really. I just thought more people would have been intrigued by the news that a company that had been such a large part of gaming and entertainment for the last twenty years was shutting down.

Well, he did subsequently express surprise that no one was commenting on his post, so I explained why for at least me. I wasn’t being disdainful, I was answering his question. I do remember Red vs Blue, but that’s about it. Nothing else in that list that was later posted has any memories for me.Blackhawk wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2024 4:25 pm I have never really understood why people who don't care about a thing feel the need to point that out in a discussion by people who care enough to create a thread about it.

I only meant that when you came back and stated that you had thought others would reply, it sorta set up the whole ‘I don’t remember them’ list of replies to your inquiry.
And for a brief moment it became almost funny how many of us recalled a little of the RvB thing, but that was all.
On the topic of this company shutting down, it seems like a bad omen, frankly - as it seems like they were prolific and big enough to survive if the environment allowed for it, which makes me sad that the environment seems to not support that kind of entity. I’m surprised it doesn’t.

We’re not the demographic anymore. Same with Game Theory’s MatPat retiring. Something’s up with content creation.

It's all about streaming and Tik Tok now.
YouTube has made it untenable for content creators unless they have Patreons and most folk don't want to pay for something that had traditionally been "free" to consume.
