Francis Ford Coppola unveils the first look at his anticipated sci-fi epic, Megalopolis. From the legendary director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, which frequently rank among the greatest films of all time, the upcoming sci-fi epic is said to follow an architect who, after a devastating disaster, attempts to rebuild New York City as a utopia. The Oscar-nominated Adam Driver, who is known for Star Wars and recently starred in 65, leads the ridiculously stacked Megalopolis cast alongside Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman, Dustin Hoffman, Shia LaBeouf, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Schwartzman and Jon Voight.
Though revealing very little in the way of plot details, the first look at Megalopolis says a lot about Francis Ford Coppola's film. Just from a single image, there is a wealth of details to observe. There is an unsettling atmosphere created by the abandoned apartments and broken windows, combined with a collapsed statue at the center of it all. While the setting still appears to be contemporary New York City, the image invokes the overall sense of a crumbling empire. The title card suggests a certain grandiosity, coupled with a strong sci-fi and futuristic leaning.
Coppola unveiling the first look also means the marketing campaign for Megalopolis has officially commenced, which means a trailer could be coming soon. Megalopolis was originally conceived by Coppola during the 1980s and to make the long-time passion project happen, he reportedly spent $120 million of his own money. Megalopolis was finally filmed from November 2022 to March 2023 and reportedly underwent a troubled production process, which isn't uncommon for Coppola. All in all, the first look at Megalopolis means Coppola's ambitious vision is one step closer to being realized on the big screen.
