Metropolis on Tubi - what's with the score?

Post by McNutt »

I have never seen Metropolis, so I was excited to see it on Tubi. I'm 30 minutes in and I can't take the music. The film's score consists of a three-piece (piano, bass, drums) jazz band playing a one-minute riff that is repeated over and over.

Why in the hell is this music attached to this film? I know damn well that was not the original accompanying music. Who decided to screw up this classic movie? Why???

The license for the soundtrack Twisted Sister wrote expired.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Oof, that 5 minute looping track McNutt mentions is NOT not how I wanna experience the film. I did some checking and my best guess is that because the film entered public domain in January of 2023, Tubi just has a shitty version that doesn’t use any licensed music.

P.S. Is this better?

I'm partial to this version:
In 1984, Giorgio Moroder restored and produced the 80-minute 1984 re-release, which had a pop soundtrack written by Moroder and performed by Moroder, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Jon Anderson, Adam Ant, Cycle V, Loverboy, Billy Squier, and Freddie Mercury.

That's the version I've seen, and I like it too.

This appears to be a copy of the 2010 "The Complete Metropolis" restoration.

I stumbled into this clip a while back, and it was stuck in my brain for a while.

I’ve seen that before as well. To me, it drives home my belief that erotic dancing back in those days consisted of trying to be as scary as possible on stage.
