I just watched the movie Weird Science

Post by Daehawk »

Wow it has been and age since I sat and watched the entire movie. I watched on Amazon Prime. It seems more edited than I remembered. Scene / scene/ scene /placement/ scene. There is no plot or what not. Just the goods.

I cant complain. I watched the original high on marijuana. I watched this one high om DXM. Still funny 38 years later. I'll never get over Bill Paxton being a being a pile a shit hehehehehehhehehe

The mall scenes were filmed at my local mall (Northbrook Court), and I was actually back behind a rope while they filmed the scene where he gets out of the sports car when he pulls into the mall.

OMG, someone made a video.
at 7:10

I was standing roughly where the black-n-white awnings are (they were not there then)

They had already filmed the action scene of the car pulling up. I saw him getting kissed by Kelly LeBrock

I (briefly) met Ilan Mitchell-Smith at Pennsic in the mid 1990s. He was a little jerky, but he could have just been trying to blend in.

Weird Science was a staple of my childhood, which looking back was not really appropriate. Not sure I've watched it since the late 1980s or early 1990s.

I've been to the Circle K where Bill & Ted was filmed.
It was on Southern Ave in Tempe, AZ which was about five miles from out apartment.

Apparently, they recently closed it down.

The Waterloo park was even closer and was filmed at Golfland/Sunsplash in Mesa, about a mile and half from us.
I never did go there, though.

It came out at roughly the same time as My Science Project and Real Genius.

Real Genius is the best of the bunch.

Never seen it. Probably never will, although this thread makes me wonder if I would like it, not having any special affinity for '80s movies or culture. I'm about 90% sure that Wife wouldn't go for it, so I'd need to watch it when she's away. And my lists at Netflix and Max are already filled with things I want to watch when Wife's away.

It's fun to see Val Kilmer when he was young and in a fun role.

I'm going to guess that you would not enjoy it. It's a pitch-perfect 80's movie, so it's not going to give you any surprises. I mean... it was written in two days, so...
However, it's a classic - and maybe you should get it over with. :)

John Hughes movies were all filmed around my hometown, at my high school, in our neighborhoods... So I have a strong connection to all of them, but it blinds my ability to judge any of them.

I went to Glenbrook North High School (so did John Hughes), which is where the administrative scenes and the final football field scene of The Breakfast Club were filmed. My kids attend (or will) New Trier High School, which is where the library scenes were filmed. Uncle Buck's house is in the town just south of us, the Ferris Bueller glass house, just north of us. I can walk my dog by the Home Alone house. Oh, I should do that. I should take an Octopus Overlords embellished photo over there someday.

Exactly. Now Bill Paxton? Replace Val with Bill in Pyper's comment and it makes sense.

I loved this movie in the 80's. I made a new gf watch it with me. She was not impressed.

In retrospect, creating an animated sex object for you and your friend to share might not be the most progressive movie idea. I doubt I could stand it today, although some of the humour would no doubt still be appealing.

I've never been to where John Hughes filmed anything, but growing up, my celebrity crush was always Molly Ringwald. That also clouds my vision when it comes to John Hughes films.

Not well-known fact: Some consider the Hughes films to be the first 'cinematic universe.' They're not officially connected, but there are tons of hints that all of them - from Sixteen Candles to Home Alone to National Lampoon - take place in the same world.

I still need to get you a copy of Blood and Donuts or find somewhere you can stream it. It's not NEARLY as good as Near Dark, but it is a fun, indie vampire film that really deserved a bit more love when it was out.

I actually went looking for it on streaming at one point, based on your recommendations, but I don't recall if I ever found it.

I'll look again. I need something to do while recovering from knee surgery next week.

Boom, found it. Streaming free on Roku Channel.

It's not a great film, but it's a fun film (with David Cronenburg) that perfectly encapsulates the whole low budget, 90s horror/comedy genre. And Gordon Curie's vampire is just damn endearing. 10 points if you can figure out what the hell Louis Ferreira is trying to do with his character though. The accent alone is all over the place.

Good luck with the knee surgery, man!

That movie is ok. But his co stars looks made it to where I couldn't fully enjoy the movie. I spent all my times everytime I saw him wondering is he was a girl pretending to be a guy or what. His real name, Gabriel, didn't help me figure it out. its like he coulda been named Pat. No offense to the guy...girls I bet thought he was cute...but he looked so strange to me it was all I thought of when I saw him on screen.

Like Amanda Bynes in Shes the Man.

here he is from Real genius.

TBH, none of the three HS "Science" movies at the time are all that good. I just find RG to be the best of the bunch. They all have fun moments, but are all pretty silly when you boil them down.

I saw Weird Science and Back to the Future in the theater back-to-back on the same night.

Obviously, BTTF is far better. But I've always liked Weird Science's animated titles and theme song.

It not only holds up, it kicks you in the dick and then makes you give it your lunch money before heading out to find the rest of your family so it can kick THEM in the dick.

This is the great Bill Paxton after kicking everyone you know in the dick.

I also loved the Frank Langella Dracula a few years earlier. He was an amazing Dracula and really captured and projected the feral side of the character, which was super creepy.

It's probably why I hated Oldman's portrayal so much - in many ways Oldman's was the precursor to Twilight and sparkly vampires, IMHO.

I thought Oldman did a decent job. I mean, he was portraying (for the most part) the classic Dracula from the book. I wouldn't say it was a precursor to "sparkly vampires". For that, you have to lay the blame almost entirely at the feet of Anne Rice.

That's why movies like Near Dark and the more recent 30 Days of Night were such a breath of fresh air. They took the romanticized vampire and made them savage predators again. They brought back the monster after years of wimpy.
