It's becoming apparent that I'm not going to see any significant weight loss until this weather warms up. I find myself not going out with the dog as much, it's still too dark to run when I get off work, etc. Probably going to get worse before it gets better, especially with Super Bowl snacks on the way.

I'm ready for dinner at 1400 and my weight is up 3 pounds this week even as I'm staying under my calorie budget. Not good. I don't mind not losing weight but I can't have it trending in the wrong direction. If I touch 187, it will be time to cut back down to 2000ish calorie level again. Blech.

If you are ok with a purely protein based diet I highly recommend Atkins.
I'm losing weight slowly but surely with no exercise. If you exercise it only helps although you may gain more muscle weight.
Plus you can literally eat your fill.
Main thing is that cheating at all slows it down and if you cheat too mych, you break the cycle and sort of start over.
Cheating means too many carbs.
Atkins also has a variety of snacks and shakes tgat I think are great. I've been eating and drinking them for decades niw even when off the diet.

I am protein rich with lots of eggs, meats, nuts, and beans (and cheese and yogurt). But I don't cut down nearly enough on processed carbs like Atkins want. I eat a lot of sandwiches, which means to much bread. I'm actually trying to get to a point where reduce proteins and processed carbs and eat more fresh produce on vegetable side of things. I just end up being too picky to make that stick. One day...

If you can hold out for about 2-3 weeks of sacrifice where you have to be super strick for ketosis to fully kick in, they make low card bread and even sell it in Walmart now. I mean you still cant have 10 sandwiches a day, but it can be regulated based on how many carbs the particular bread you get has.
Same with hamburger and hot dog buns.
I've just quit them all cold turkey. If we go out I do sneak a piece or 2 of bread if it's good thoygh.
That's probably the #1 thing I miss.
Don't miss any drinks. I've been on 98% water for years now. Diet soda here and there and Atkins shakes.
Kind of miss some pastas but not a huge deal and if I really want, there is low carb pasta available.
Plenty of Atkins candies and ice cream plus the sugar feee Twizzlers someine here mentioned covers my sweet tooth. Plus a bite of some cakes and pies at family events.
Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. I can have plenty of meats and seafood and chicken.
Biggest issue is cost but I've been buying burgers and meatballs in bulk. Next check and we are gonna stock up on a bunch of stuff.

South Beach Diet is much more reasonable.

Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack.

Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack.
That is actually not proven.
Even Snopes says undetermined.
Official cause of death is that he died of a head injury from a fall.
The reports of a heart attack were from a Dr. Roberts who was a known critic of Dr. Atkins and a vocal vegan who is against eating meat.
Because of this, I'm taking his opinions with a handful of salt.
Additionally an autopsy was never done.
Also, his doctors say that his heart issues were due to a viral infection and not his diet.

Anecdotal evidence. Whenever I've been on it all my blood work has been good and in fact, things like a1c and cholesterol have gone down.
Yes, it can be a hard diet for some people and yes if you just come off it and go straight back to your old eating habits your weight and blood work will get worse but thats on you and not the diet.

Still, the Atkin's Diet is overboard and the same results can be achieved with the South Beach diet.

In any case, both of them suck eventually - and one needs to figure out their way of living with a menu that works for them - but going on either of them is certainly educational to that end goal.

IMO.

So many things in life can be waved away with "on you" - but the truth of it is that we are humans and this isn't something that should just be waved away - it's a result of being on -the diet- , then it's connected to the diet.

Also, just my opinion. But the diet is extreme. IMO.

I'd say it's a result of coming off the diet not being on it.
I'd suspect that if you do any diet, get fit. The drop it all and go back to eating lots of junk food, you'd have similar results.
If you go to work, become a superstar with hard work, then decide one day to just give 50% from now on you'll probably be fired at some point.
A lot of things stop working when you stop doing them.

Ahh. Ok. Very possible I didn't explain myself properly.
In my experience it's been either a small weight gain and bump in numbers or a big weight gain and bump in numbers.
The small was when I came off it to head to basic training. I somehow went from around 230 to around 250 and ot wasn't a muscle increase.
The big was from around 235 to around 300 or 310.
That was because I completely dropped it and went back to some bad habits. Thungs like 3 to 4 bowls of cerwal in the morning. Sometimes to get filled and sometimes because it tasted so goid and my willpiwer was on vacation.
The other times were in between and depended how far I went off the rails.prior to this round I ended atkins at around 245 from that 310 thing. This was probably about 8 or 9 years ago. Since then I've been between 246 and 255 give or take. I somehow gained about 15 to 20 pounds while in the hospital, on a feeding tube and in a coma fir 3 weeks. I REALLY thoyght that I had lost weight from not eating. In hindsight I should probably have a directive that if I'm on a feeding tube please only send liquified steak down it.

So yeah, I did have boughts of getting worse than I started but this was because I stopped the diet and started up bad habits. At my peak of bad habits, I could eat a whole xl pizza pie in one sitting or a whole box of cereal if I liked the taste.

No clue. I was on a feeding tube for a total of about 1.5 months. Maybe 2.
I REALLY thought that with everything going on I'd gave at least lost some weight.
I suspect the tubes main concern is to shove calories and vitamins and such with no real concern about weight gain.

Horrible week. Pushing the 187, which was my goal, so I'm going to stop redlining my "moderately active" calorie intake and shoot for 200 calories under a day for a moderately active lifestyle. I'm probably gaining muscle weight, but I still have too much fat weight to lose. I probably should allow this weight gain, but I know me and I'm all or nothing.

Also, I'm going to move my jogged steps from 700 a pop to 800 a pop. My activity level is trending positive by all measures, which is good. It's been a very difficult battle since my accident.

Not too worried about today's bump considering it's a weigh-in right after a Super Bowl party. The week up to this point hasn't fluctuated much out of that 200-201 range so I feel pretty confident I'm holding steady.

I think I'm definitely hitting a point where some of the weight loss is being offset by muscle gain. I've been doing high-resistance rowing and body weight exercises consistently for 3 weeks now and I'm starting to see some toning and a bit less belly. That's keeping me encouraged.

Despite that, my eating is still not where it needs to be. I did awesome that first week of the new year but have yet to stay that strict since. Really going to try this week to cut out the sugar and carbs.

So two days after I decide I need to cut my calorie intake my upward trending weight hits a new all time low. Now I have to figure out if I want to stay at 200 under my budget or go back to redlining. I don't mind not losing weight, as I am trying to build muscle. I actually don't want to lose more weight in my current state for now. I just don't want to allow myself to trend up. Not sure where I'm going now.

Despite another bump, I had two different people tell me this weekend I looked like I had lost weight. So something is working with the rowing workouts. Guess I'll have to try to ignore the scale and focus on just staying consistent with the resistance training.

My eating's still not where I want it to be, so I hesitate to blame it all on muscle even if I'm showing some progress there.

It's been dry, but too cold to walk. I require 35 or more degrees at 9 a.m., or 30+ if it's sunny and calm, and those conditions aren't being met. Today was 31 and sunny, but the man on the radio said the wind chill feels like 17 degrees. Nope. Oh well, I'm still in negative territory YTD, well within my goal of holding the line until spring.

Suddenly losing weight again. Not sure where to go for now. I'd rather build muscle now than lose more weight but I don't want to gain more weight either. Debating moving my lifestyle to active. If weight loss continues, I will which will up my calorie floor another 350 calories a day or so. I'd want to start by not redlining. As it warms, I may do this. As i intend to get more active outdoors.

Also upping Aerobic step floor to 10 minutes this week. I have another surgery tentatively scheduled for the end of May so a lot of this will reset and then hopefully ramp back up quickly.

I'm a bit frustrated because the weight just keeps going up and up and up. Despite burning far more calories than I was at the end of last year and not eating any worse than I was then (and most of the time better).

The only change has been consistently rowing for the past 5 weeks. I just would have thought at some point that cardio would have paid some dividends. I guess the blood pressure is ultimately all that matters. I did buy new running shoes over the weekend so I'm looking forward to adding that in as well.

Here’s a weight loss question: I tried to do a “dryer January” this year and failed completely, so I committed to a completely dry last week of January and all of February, and that has been successful (I think I do better with binary decisions and not shades of grey when it comes to diet and drinking).

Anyway, I expected the pounds to melt away with the lack of alcohol consumption. I had been drinking pretty much every night - (usually) not to excess, but a couple pints (heavy IPAs and Hazys) or glasses of red wine. That’s a shit ton of calories. The beers alone are like eating a loaf of bread!

But I haven’t really noticed much of a difference. Any thoughts? Similar experiences? What gives?

I am not a nutritionist and this isn't really correct, but the way I see it...

200 calories per drink avg x 2 per day x 40 days = 16,000 calories / ~3500 cal per pound = ~4.5 pounds

Did you replace those drinks with anything? sodas, more snacks, coffee with creamer, etc?

Unless you are tracking calories in detail, it would be easy to make up 400 calories a day with a bit more of other things.

I know one of my downfalls is I'll start eating healthier - say, a 350 calorie Healthy Choice Power Bowl for lunch. But in my mind I think "Well, I only ate 350 calories for lunch, so now I can afford a snack" (especially when those afternoon cravings kick in). And then before you know it I'm eating half a box of crackers I wouldn't have ate otherwise because I'm starving at 3pm.

I did a dry January a couple years ago and lost 5 pounds without making any other changes at the time.

Depending on the size of the pour and the ABV, a couple hazy or heavy IPAs is likely closer to 600 calories than 400.

This is my experience and is directly related to my obsessive caloric intake tracking. 400 calories is a bag of mircrowave popcorn, my overnight oats before adding fruit, most light sandwiches, a small amount of most cookies, etc... It's very easy for just about any snack that I'd eat to to hit that calorie mark.

Every year, my weight starts climbing in March and peaks in April. I don't consciously change my habits or diet, yet it's highly predictable. My goal for the next two months is merely to minimize that.

Finally had a good week! I don't know exactly what's going on weight-wise, but I do know the consistent rowing is beneficial. I feel better, I'm seeing marked improvements in my rowing stats, I feel stronger. At this point, I don't really care what the scale shows as long as my bloodword and BP is improving which I'm hoping it has since I'm seeing benefits elsewhere.

Between the busted arm and dentures that don't quite fit right, I've not been eating much lately (much to my wife's concern). I clocked in at 205 at the hospital a few weeks ago, wouldn't be surprised if I was sub-200 now (sure, I could try to find the scale, but then I'd have to get up).

Probably not the preferred method of weight loss -- I have been going on some walks with the wife the past few weeks on the spring days we've been having (including today). Busted arm means no biking though. I didn't bike at all last year (once upon a time, I was 10K miles per year). I haven't run in several years, and my last race was 2015.

Wife is moving to day shift in 2 weeks. That means I'll not be having my evening beer(s). I'm sure that'll reduce my waistline as well.
