Because the league says it’s okay. If you want to complain about anyone it should be Ohtani for agreeing to it, even asking for it.

But don’t worry, with out pitching the Dodgers won’t win it all again.
Then why bother having luxury tax. ?

It still counts, just less.

Explaining the unprecedented deferrals in Ohtani's Dodgers deal
“Article XVI – Deferred Compensation” of the CBA states:

There shall be no limitations on either the amount of the deferred compensation or the percentage of total compensation attributable to deferred compensation for which a Uniform Player’s Contract may provide.
...
By structuring the contract in this way, the idea is to give the Dodgers more financial flexibility in the short term, but also ease their burden relative to the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT). For 2024, the CBT is $237 million, and with the structure of this deal the Dodgers would currently be under the CBT threshold, though it is assumed more big moves are on the way.

A team's Competitive Balance Tax figure is determined using the average annual value of each player's contract on the 40-man roster, plus any additional player benefits. If there was no money deferred, the AAV on Ohtani’s contract would be $70 million. However, any money deferred outside the term of the contract is calculated using its present-day value.

Because the value of a dollar decreases over time, the contract has a present-day value of roughly $460 million for the purposes of the CBT, given that so much of it is deferred for more than a decade. Therefore, the Dodgers will have a CBT payroll hit of roughly $46 million per year for the next 10 years from Ohtani’s contract. Essentially, Ohtani offered to defer this much money in order for the Dodgers to have payroll flexibility to continue building a winning team.

Kind of surprised that the Player's Union doesn't have an issue with stuff like this.

They probably will if this actually becomes common by the next negotiations.

But in a way they might like this because more players may make middle money because of it being available. The players have no reason to like the luxury tax.

The player still has to agree to it.

Baltimore Orioles lease extension at Camden Yards approved
The Maryland Stadium Authority approved a lease extension for the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Monday in one of the final steps formalizing a long-term agreement between the team and the state.

The deal was set to go before the state's Board of Public Works -- a three-member board chaired by the governor -- later in the day.

The Orioles' lease at Camden Yards expires at the end of the year. In September, the team announced a new 30-year deal to stay in the ballpark, and the governor's office released details of a memorandum of understanding involving the team, the Stadium Authority and Gov. Wes Moore.
...
The deal extends the lease for 30 years, with an option to end it after 15 if the team does not receive approval from state officials for development plans next to the ballpark. The Orioles would have until the end of 2027 to reach an agreement on that land redevelopment.

In addition to Ohtani, the team signed right-hander Tyler Glasnow to a $136.5 million, five-year contract after he was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to Los Angeles.

The Red Sox traded Chris Sale (and took on $17MM of next year's salary) to the Braves for Vaughn Grissom.

Not super familiar with Grissom. Apparently he came up on the Braves in 2022, played very well, but then was demoted to AAA for most of 2023 (though seems like he generally played well there). Boston media as far as I can tell seems happy with the trade - Sale was a stud when healthy (and was key to the 2018 title), but can't stay healthy anymore.

Former Mets GM Billy Eppler suspended for fabricating injuries
Former New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler was suspended through the 2024 World Series on Friday by commissioner Rob Manfred, who concluded that he directed the team to fabricate injuries to create open roster spots.

No Mets medical or athletic training personnel were mentioned in the announcement by Major League Baseball.

Manfred said in a statement that Eppler directed "the deliberate fabrication of injuries; and the associated submission of documentation for the purposes of securing multiple improper injured list placements during the 2022 and 2023 seasons."

The scheme involved fabricating injuries for up to a dozen players, sources told ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Sources also said that an anonymous letter from within the organization tipped off MLB.

Sigh Mets are always going to Mets.
Capitalism tries for a delicate balance: It attempts to work things out so that everyone gets just enough stuff to keep them from getting violent and trying to take other people’s stuff.
