There’s a joke in there somewhere about woke vampires.

I agree Oldman was fine as Dracula. The biggest problem with Coppola's movie was Keanu Reeves as Harker. Could have just driven him through Oldman's heart and been done with it.

But, yes, Near Dark is fantastic.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of my favorite vampire films of all time, despite Keanu's performance (I actually a bit bad for him - I read he was way overscheduled while filming it and completely exhausted throughout). That doesn't excuse his performance, however. He's a super nice guy but he's never been a great actor. He's the only flaw in an otherwise remarkable film.

I can never criticize Gary Oldman in anything, I think he's one of the best actors currently working. It's been said he's such a good actor, you might find yourself walking down the street one day and all of a sudden someone yells "Cut!" and you realize Gary Oldman was playing yourself the whole time.

If you've never seen Greg The Bunny, Gary Oldman did a fantastic guest spot.

Here's the clip:

If you like, the entire episode is here:

And if you've never watched Greg The Bunny, I highly recommend it. Seth Green, Eugene Levy, Sarah Silverman, etc makes it well worth a watch.

It's funny to watch stuff from the 80s and try to figure out what you could get away with from that time nowadays.

Answer: Not much.

Yeah. In all honesty, I didn't even make it through that clip. And I don't think I even cracked a smile.

But I was surprised to see Carl the janitor! :D

I do think it's sad though. People like Mel Brooks used racism to ridicule and point out how stupid it was (edit: I do recall quite a few instances of gay characters being portrayed purely for laughs though in a Brooks film, now that I think about it). Nowadays you have to be VERY careful with such things...if not avoid the topic altogether. This one though isn't quite the same. In the 80s (and prior/after), making fun of minorities and homosexuals was an easy laugh. Heck, I watched a movie from 2009 the other night that was full of gay stereotypes and racist jokes. And it wasn't for the sake of satire, it was for the sake of getting a laugh.

It's all about intent and context.

I can’t remember the comedian, but their joke was: Making fun of gay people in the 80s and 90s was funny because culture was becoming more gay and androgynous. Think about it. David Bowie, Queen, Twisted Sister, KISS, big hair, mullets, designer jeans, pink shirts, etc.
