Ribbing is fine with me as long as it is not excessive. Especially if it at least attempts to be humorous.

To be clear, I am pointing out that the character, Sam Wheat, was played by Patrick Swayze and briefly by Whoopi Goldberg.

I understand that, but you're taking an irreverent observation about the height of an actor and blowing it out of proportion into a personal insult of some sort that was never intended.

Max Peck wrote: Thu Mar 11, 2021 9:50 am Good to know. I've been deliberately avoiding that sort of commentary, because it seems a little dickish to denigrate someone else's take instead of pitching my own. But if taking shots at other players is in the spirit of the game, then I'll keep that in mind.
I hope that you are saying this in good spirits and not taking it the way you keep making it sound.

And , this is just my unpopular (perhaps) opinion.

Clearly -I- feel it’s part of the game. But I think also clearly, some people seem to take insult to any criticism and see it as just complaining (or, wow, being a dick) , so I was hoping to hear other people’s take on it before you declare that I’ve decided we should all ‘dump on each other ‘ and be dicks about it.
That seems like a fair take. Since it happens so rarely but generally doesn't get any reaction, I just wasn't sure whether or not people felt it is kosher. I often have difficulty in discerning where social boundaries lie, and it's generally easier to ask a blunt question than to just keep testing the limits until I piss people off, even if asking the question is likely to annoy someone. I suppose just staying quiet and not aggravating anyone is an option too, but where's the fun in that?

If my tone came across as too negative, I apologize. My tendency to be brusque and snarky is not my finest feature.

My response to the comment that De Niro might be kind of short is that De Niro may or may not be considered "tall". My response to being told to lighten up (because it's on me to be amused by your witty use of tired old memes) and not get my knickers in a knot is that you're being a dick.

But hey, don't get your knickers in a knot over it.

No, of course it's not. To clarify, I was not aiming to insult you (which seems to be what you're implying) or insisting upon your amusement; I posted an admittedly old movie-themed meme in an otherwise light-hearted movie trivia game thread to try and lighten the mood after it seemed you'd taken personal offense at my comments about an actor's height. Clearly that was a failed attempt at humour on my part, and sometimes that happens. But I assure you, it was never my intention to offend or personally insult you here (i.e. "being a dick") and I sincerely apologise if you felt it was. I am not sure what more I can say or do to convince you, so I hope my apology is sufficient to allow us to get the thread back on track and back to playing the game.

I'm surprised this didn't happen during the "debate" after I said Titanic was based on a true story. I eventually let that go and I'm actually very bad at taking ribbing, even during a game.

On another note, I can also be the giver of shots. Six years ago I got miffed when Max Peck would initially take my choice of "name that movie" and add his own screenshots from the movie. He wasn't being a dick and there was technically nothing wrong with that, but I didn't care for it. We moved on. My point is that this is a bunch of adults who 1) still have the social barrier of internet anonymity but 2) have mostly been around each other (virtually) a long time, so I generally find moving on works best when you can't read the room.
