Beyond All Reason (BAR) is a free RTS that is an upgraded Total Annihilation. It adds the tier 4 units and additional base options - shielding to TA. This is NOT a free to play. It is just free. There is a large fan base that had created the Spring Engine and it was further refined to create BAR. I have tinkered with it and it looks really good and is stable. The AI is a bit weak and I have yet to try multiplayer. If RTS is your thing and you liked TA and SupCom, then this should push all the nostalgia buttons.
