I didn't see this thread. OMG I've never had to discuss the nuance of line changes and competing officiating priorities with people as many times in my life as after that Kadri OT goal. Lol.

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
Tampa fans were whining that this also should have been called as a too many men penalty:
Puck took Landeskog's skate blade clean off on a blocked shot. The player replacing Landeskog has jumped onto the ice early in the sense that Landeskog wasn't off yet...but seriously, how is him *crawling* and another player (MacKinnon) taking himself out of the play to help is creating any sort of advantage (for Tampa, maybe...)

And so it begins! I was grilling some salmon so I didn't actually see this...
Moments after receiving the Stanley Cup, the Colorado Avalanche made a serious impact on the trophy. As the team was gathering for a photo, Nicolas Aube-Kubel took a spill and gave the Cup a nice dent.

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
Without seeing when the other player entered it is hard to even evaluate. We know he satisfies at least one criteria for a line change - he was out of play (crawling on the ice!). If the replacement player jumped on when he was within 5 feet of the bench then that's within the rules. The sub is on ice per Rule 74 and broken skate is off the ice for the purposes of Rule 70. If he wasn't within 5 feet well then that is where the language in Rule 74 kicks in that a penalty 'may be assessed'. It becomes a judgement call and as you say no advantage is being conferred. A perfectly reasonable non-call. It's the perfect combo of whining and not understanding the spirit/letter of the rules.gilraen wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 6:26 pm Tampa fans were whining that this also should have been called as a too many men penalty:

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
Kuemper out in COL, DeBrincat out in CHI. I'm OK with the Kuemper trade, as the Avs didn't win the Cup with great goaltending and this should raise the odds of getting some of the UFAs back next year. But DeBrincat cornfuzzles me. The Hawks have been rebuilding for awhile now, and now yet another young cornerstone is out so they can... continue to rebuild? That 7th pick tonight better be a doozy.

The tweets on this move are amazing all around. The entire hockey world is in collective disbelief--he left eight figures on the table to go to CBJ and be farther from home than other teams' offers, on a worse team.

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
This was the exact video I was thinking of.
Also from an Athletic article on the Gaudreau signing:
Why did Gaudreau pick Columbus? How did the Blue Jackets, who’ve never advanced past the second round of the playoffs, land one of the NHL’s star players?
Gaudreau said the Blue Jackets were on his list before the free agency period opened, based on the experiences he’s had playing in Nationwide Arena and on conversations he’s had with current and former Blue Jackets, who raved about it.
“I’d never been to Columbus before until I made it to the NHL, so when I started playing there I didn’t know what I was walking into, and I was just … ‘Wow!'” Gaudreau told The Athletic by phone late Wednesday. “They’ve always had great crowds, really into the game. I said to myself then, ‘This looks like a really fun place to play.’
“But it was more than that. I played in the (world championships) with Zach Werenski. I’ve known Eric Robinson for like 15-20 years. And some former guys, like Cam Atkinson and Dalton Prout … those guys were just like, ‘You’re going to absolutely love the place.'”
Gaudreau joked that his contentious relationship with the Nationwide Arena cannon, which blasts each time the Blue Jackets score, has already undergone a change of heart.
“That cannon kind of scares me a little bit, and I’ve had a run-in with that cannon a couple of times,” said Gaudreau, who officially will be introduced in a news conference Thursday. “I used to not want to hear it. Now I want to hear it all the time.
“Hopefully we’ll get that thing really blasting this season.”

One more serious note about CBJ - they've got some cap work to do if they want to re-sign Patrik Laine, who is a RFA.
Maybe going back in time and not giving Erik Gudbranson $4M for 4 years would have been a good place to start.

The Flames somehow turned Matt Tkachuk into Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, a prospect, and a 2025 first rounder.

I'm *not* happy about what this means for the Atlantic division.

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
Your Mortoning does make a good point. But apparently both players are opening to signing extensions in Calgary...if they do, then Treliving pulled off a real winner of a trade.
It's still a good trade even on expiring deals, at least in my opinion.

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
When I heard the names (and didn't realize the contract situations), I was floored at what Calgary got in return. If they can resign those players (neither is American, right?), then that's a huge coup for the Flames. I would be surprised if either players signs without having experienced at least a few months playing in Alberta first (considering how Calgary's summer has gone).

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
Yep, neither Huberdeau or Weegar are American.
I think it'll be easier to get Weegar signed than Huberdeau, but I bet if the Flames offered Huberdeau what they offered Gaudreau, it'd be hard to turn down.

Flames extend Huberdeau. 8 years 10.5M AAV (so the Gaudreau deal).

Indeed! It's probably gonna be an anchor when the deal is done, but at least it's structured in a way they can buy him out without any real lingering issues.

Nazem Kadri to the Flames, and with the rumors of Sean Monahan getting traded, this is one hell of an offseason for Brad Treliving.

Re: NHL 2021-22 Postseason
The $12.6M per year is pretty fantastic (Connor McDavid, the consensus #1 player in the league—but not the unanimous #1 player in the league, Austin Matthews in TOR and Nate McKinnon in COL both have their non-homer advocates—makes $12.5M per year). The numbers that I'd heard tossed around as folks speculated went as high as $16M per year (which is very close to the 20% team salcap cap per player contract). There aren't many out there for whom I'd say $12.6M yearly is a team-friendly deal (and this may not be by the end...) but this sure feels that way today.
Another great move by the Avs management team.
