The most fabled films we didn't get

Post by JetFred »

Help me think of film projects that are revered for what they might have been, even though they were never finished as intended so we don't really know. This is inspired by my recent viewing of Dune (2021) and Zack Snyder's Justice League, and I've got the 72-minute version of The Thief and the Cobbler paused as I type this.

We wanted Jodorowsky's Dune, but we eventually got David Lynch's Dune.
We wanted Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler, but we ended up with Fred Calvert and Miramax' Arabian Knight.
We wanted Terry Gilliam's Johnny Depp and Don Quixote, but we got Lost in La Mancha and eventually Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote with Adam Driver.

Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon. That would have been awesome.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is a little less lofty than those: Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League.

Yes, I expect some of this might overlap a bit with my recent thread about franchises that flopped on the first movie.

Yeah, would have loved to have seen that.

Huh.

It's not a film, but I was today years old when I discovered that it is now a novel.

I was really excited for the idea of a Dark Tower series that spanned multiple movies with TV shows in between. Unfortunately we got whatever the hell that other abomination was.

I'll throw this one here in this thread (since it's a better home here) The History of the World, Part II

I never felt like I got The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie that I wanted. Perhaps not really doable - hence the 'fabled film'.

I think I'm the only person who really quite liked the HHGGtG film. It certainly wasn't perfect but I thought they did about as well as they could, considering.

To be honest, I've never looked much into why they ditched the story halfway through and just made up stuff. Was it because of a delay-then-rush production cycle to put out a finished product?

I still maintain that History of the World: Part I contained Mel Brooks' best (and most overlooked) joke.

Yeah, that ranks up there with the Life of Brian scene about getting stoned for saying Jehovah.

Geez, the movie could not have been more clear that the sequel was "The Search For More Money"

Orson Welles's adaptation of Heart of Darkness.

And here's a list of the Best Films Never Made, each with a short article of its own.

The list is definitely worth a look. I'd never before heard that John Lennon once moved seriously on a project to make a Beatles version of The Lord of the Rings: Paul would be Frodo, Ringo would be Sam, George would Gandalf, and John would be Gollum.

I was unaware that was ever considered. Coppola's take was brilliant, though.

I forgot about getting District 9 instead of Neill Blomkamp's Halo because I'm not especially a Halo fan and I really like District 9.
