New track from John Mayer has a very, very 80s feel
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I'll have to check it out. I saw Numan on the tour where he recorded his "Living Ornaments" double-live album in 1979; one of the performances on that album was recorded at that show. It was a fairly small theater that no longer exists, he was really young back then and we were blown away by how tight the band was and the whole choreography of the show.
Oh, and Gary Numan was, hands down, the best music to play during sex. The rhythms and exaggerated beat was spot-on. At least it was for my teenage-self. These days I find it hard to keep up with a recording of Bach Adagios.

On that tour, I bet he wasn't even shaving yet. We were young, he was young. I saw him again several decades later at the Cabaret Metro, a club known for alternative and punk music. Not only was he middle aged and a bit pudgy, but most of the audience were hardcore goth...and that seemed bizarre. Watching the crowd was more fascinating than watching the concert (although I liked the album -- Exile IIRC). Last time I recall him coming to town was 2017 or 18, I wasn't able to attend.hitbyambulance wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 12:43 pm i was just thinking yesterday that Living Ornaments '79 was quite a good live album. he's always surrounded himself with very capable musicians

Re: What are you listening to right now?
My brother already told me he is coming here in October, at the Park West. It's been a long time since I've been to that venue, I was leaning on the stage for Pat Moraz and Bill Bruford's "Music for Piano and Drums" show, and I saw Adrian Belew's The Bears there.

ShadowParty - s/t
members of Devo and New Order, but... not any of the original members. lol (new additions as previous members died or were fired, respectively) but somehow has a noticeable 90's-era-New-Order-side-project sound to it.. much more Revenge or Monaco than The Other Two.

I'm sorry, but I've been told that pot smokers are lazy. There's no way he's released that many albums.
Or in the alternative, imagine how many albums he would have released if he weren't a lazy pot smoker!

Re: What are you listening to right now?
So, I just checked out the new Helloween (reunion) album. It is far, FAR better than it has any right to be. Probably the best thing they have put out since the 80's (though I certainly haven't heard it all). The Deris/Kiske interplay is surprisingly fantastic. It's by far the most I have enjoyed Deris as a singer. They pretty much stick to fast power metal stuff which is what most people (me inclued) would want them to do. I am not the power metal fan I used to be (not that I hate it now or anything) but I thoroughly enjoyed my first listen.

https://youtu.be/PXZB-YiYIak The band is still spot-on, and Shirley has exactly zero fucks left. A solid, solid album. I got the deluxe version with a couple of covers, which are also mostly good.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Being a fan of avant-garde and extreme metal sometimes leads down some strange musical rabbit holes. Today's is courtesy of Nytt Land, with the very cool (and decidedly non-metal) track Ritual. It's more ambient? Tribal? Atmospheric? No idea what this would classify as.
Regardless...very cool.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I enjoyed the first half of the new Thy Catafalque but have to get back to it. I don't think I've listened to them in depth before but I've definitely heard the name.
I've come back to Xoth's Interdimensional Invocations (2019) a lot recently, and have realized it's become one of my favourite metal albums of the last few years. It has the rare property of my loving it pretty much from start to finish. It's a lean 39 minutes, but doesn't feel short at all. I love this band's unique mishmash of sounds, being alternately described as technical/melodeath/blackened/progressive/thrash. It's perfect marriage of aggression, melody, and complexity for me. The shredding is amazing and the drumming's obscene. The eldritch theme is also somewhat fresher IMO than the usual Norse/pagan/occult stuff.
I think Back to the Jungle (below) may be the best all-around track after multiple listens, though Mountain Machines is the most initially catchy, and Haruspex (with an opening that sounds like early/heavy The Sword, and probably whatever classic bands they cribbed lol) has my favourite riff on the entire album at 0:40, though you really need the lead-in.

I've been waiting to see the doc. I've been a fan of the Mael brothers since I first heard the brilliance of This Town Ain't BIg Enough for the Both of Us back in college. They can go from operatic to just pure pop within the same song with ease.

i recommend Sparks' second-to-most-recent album _Hippopotamus_ from a few years ago - a really good record. (the one that just came out, _A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip_ is fine, but not up to that level)

So...here's the last three albums I picked up.
Men Without Hats will forever be my favorite 80's guilty pleasure band. I absolutely adore that album...and the cover looks great next to the new Cerebral Rot release! Which is fantastic old-school death metal, btw.
