Midway Trailer - Everything that is wrong with Hollywood.
I hate everything about this trailer.
In the original Midway film, Chareton Heston crashed a jet onto the carrier deck (seriously), and that was 100x better than anything in Roland Emmerich's film. Goddamn, I hate that man's films.

It's like he saw Bay's Pearl Harbor and thought it was too contemplative.

It looks like the movie also includes the Doolittle Raid, because let's face it, you can't possibly make an epic Hollywood movie just about the Battle of Midway. They've also thrown in Pearl Harbor to properly educate us on the backstory, hopefully they include some German planes.LawBeefaroni wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:19 am "The courage of a few men"

I saw them crashing a two engine Japanese land bomber crashing into an aircraft carrier. That would not have happened, if it ever did, until late in the war, like 44-45.
Must be quite an epic movie.

Yeah, that courage of a few men bullshit pisses me off. You want to say that about Doolittle's Raiders, fine. But you don't use that line in a trailer for a movie about Midway. Few men my ass.LawBeefaroni wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:19 am "The courage of a few men"

Does this move try to one up Bay's Pearl Harbor by having our hero shoot down planes at Pearl Harbor, bomb Tokyo AND sink the Akagi?

Wow, that trailer uses almost every trailer cliche in the book:
- WHOWMMMMMMMMMM sound
- Slow piano tune in the background
- Lots of noise then cut to complete silence while line of dialogue is delivered
- Raucous drum beats
- Dialogue interspersed with quick cuts to action sequences
- Escalating music and action climax to final cut to title
I'm sure there's some I missed.

I am not 100% sure but those lines were being used when the Doolittle Raid was being shown. They also could have been referring to the bombers that flew off of Midway Island.LawBeefaroni wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:19 am "The courage of a few men"

But overall I agree, they have a hell of a lot of material there for what is probably a 2-3 hour movie.

Doolittle had 16 bombers IIRC.
(Fun fact: my wife's uncle was lead mechanic for one of the Doolittle bombers, so I can feel personally affronted by this movie.)

Iwo Jima. The whole point was the airfield, so they need to work Iwo in there. Maybe have some kamikazes trying to hit the flag or something.

Looks like it's everything from Pearl Harbor all the way up to Midway, including the Doolittle Raid. All that human angle makes it feel way too much like Pearl Harbor.
FWIW, that "stall going up" thing is a real maneuver called a 'stall turn' (it used to be called an Immelman turn, but no longer)

Yeah, but you aren't doing that in a Dauntless divebomber. You stay in formation and use the multiple rear gunners to try and fend off the fighters. You fly right down on the deck so they can't get under the gunners field of fire. Also, you probably would not do that in a Brewster Buffalo or a Wildcat, because the Zeke could out turn and out climb you easily. That's why so many Army/Navy aviators ended up dead, and why Claire Chennault was so successful.

It’s a shame because there is so much real life material. It could have been a tension filled cat and mouse game between Nimitz and his code breakers and Yamamoto, the search planes from both sides, and even the squadrons as they search for each other’s carriers.
The torpedo squadrons sacrifice as they go in without fighter cover, the heroic efforts to save Yorktown, even the Japanese captains insistence to go down with their ships. But no, it had to be sacrificed to the god of CGI.

I feel like calling this popular history. You make a historical movie while grossly blowing out the historical facts in order to just make a loud action movie to try being popular with the tentpole movie crowd. This looks so cringe-inducing, and I feel alarmed at the crowd of young people who are going to see this and think this is really how it played out.

You can't make this movie without massive amounts of CGI. Thing is it is not the CGI that will make it bad, it will be the writing for the human characters that will make it bad.raydude wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 11:04 am It’s a shame because there is so much real life material. Poked around a bit and it looks like it was generally around 3,000 feet... but either height would not make for Good Movie! Did enjoy seeing the radial arm in action that swings the bomb out below the propeller, more flapjack prevention.

I loved that too. I used to build model WWII planes as a kid and my favorite one was an SBD that released a bomb using the radial arm.MonkeyFinger wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 8:38 amPoked around a bit and it looks like it was generally around 3,000 feet... but either height would not make for Good Movie! WTH are you guys talking about 'radial arm'. Thats all BS. Am I missing some joke here?
EDIT: NM found info..its a swinging cradle. No wonder I couldn't find anything on a radial arm lol.
And this movie looks horrible. The in air attack screaming and lack of wind and all cgi makes me not even able to watch a trailer good.

Funny, I recently finished reading Incredible Victory: The Battle of Midway, which was superb. I've probably seen the 1976 Midway movie a dozen times (it used to be on cable a lot when I was a kid), but I don't think I'll be seeing this one.
