The game is slated to receive in the next patch one of the biggest changes to the game to date with the addition of DX11. Currently the game uses DX9 and this is where most people have an issue when it comes to framerates in cities.

And the latest patch is a big one. 1.35 adds DirectX 11 functionality, and voice-navigation to the GPS, among other things.

With Washington coming out soon it might be hitting critical mass for me to get back to it. I've tried to get back into ETS2 a couple of times in the past few months, but I really like driving in the good old USA. It's just a little sad that I'll probably be too over the hill to play the game by the time all the states are released. The good news is that I'll still have a drivers license and can rent a big rig and do it all in real life

I've reinstalled ATS and giving it another look. Most of the DLC is on sale, so I might pull the trigger on those as well.

Oh btw, for the male voice of the GPS, they've hired Doug Cockle, who also voiced Geralt. While they couldn't actually put Geralt in the game, he did do a gruff voice as one of the English selections for the GPS in all its sarcastic glory, so it's as close to Geralt as we'll get

I played ATS, then I installed and played ETS2 and decided that ETS2 feels more complete. As much as I like the idea of driving in the USA, I just wish they had planned on releasing the states on a quicker schedule, or maybe add more detail to the first states released. So I'm off to Europe!

I drove through Yakima IRL Monday and when I drove through in the game, it was quite recognizable. Even the tattered "Palm Springs of Washington" sign.

I don't see how ATS *needs* more territory. It started huge. It has gotten huger. I never imagined it would expand to cover the entire US. The bigger it gets the better but I'd much rather see more features than more highways. Not that I have any suggestions for features. ATS needs territory for a feeling of completeness. At least by including, say Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado there would be a nice block of states that connect to one another logically. Having Washington state but not Utah feels incomplete.
There's not much in eastern Colorado, so it lays out nicely.

It's not that there's something wrong with ATS as it stands, it's just that ETS2 now has such a large network with so many interesting things to see I'd rather spend time on it than ATS. Maybe when they have completed my USA Western block I'll be ready to go back to it.

Yeah, I think ATS is fine as is. Keep in mind that the U.S States are not only of bigger scale, but bigger in general vs smaller countries of Europe. They've already covered a lot of territory and even moreso now with Washington. Personally, I like the idea of an evolving ATS, and find it offers more variety in its environments. I have to somewhat agree with you on that. It's the urban areas that give ETS2 the variety but between the cities it can be unremarkable.

Yeah, I 100%'d the roads awhile back and that was after I had bought the whole Scandinavian DLC, and that had a lot of interesting road networks. I just feel that overall, there's not a whole lot different all across the map. Once I felt I had spent enough time in it, I never went back as I was kind of bored with it. For me, it's all about quality vs quantity. At least in ATS, if I travel to a different State, I have a chance to encounter a change in environment which alleviates some of the tedium. Everywhere you go feels a bit more unique. I feel like there's a bit more work put into ATS cities too. I've always for ETS2 cities to be a bit bland.

The OO Effect had its effect, I bought all the DLC for ATS , except for the paint jobs. I had played a few missions last night so I had enough money, plus a bank loan, to buy a truck. A Volvo, mind you . And my first mission was a Special Transport:

Just had my first run via DirectX11, and it's so so smooth. It's like a night and day difference between the DX9 version. And I feel like I have more draw distance with less pop-in. Is that possible?
Also the Geralt voice is so damn perfect. You have to enable Voice Nav via the audio settings then choose a voice, in this case Doug (Raspy). It's funny hearing Geralt give directions.

Yep, I think road detours are an interesting feature that isn't all that well implemented. They are totally random and don't take into account of any dead-ends. I've had it happen several times now where there was a road closure on the only road available out, and it's worsened by the fact that the GPS doesn't factor in the detours, so if you're not paying attention you can end up going forever in circles which can be frustrating especially in a place like Portland. I wish they'd have it reroute or at least give you the option to have it do that.

This is very cool. Last year we took a trip driving from Florida to Las Vegas. On the way back we cut down through Arizona. We had a long driving day from Tucson AZ to Alamogordo NM and by the time we hit Las Cruces it was after dark so missed seeing the Space Murals Museum And Gift Shop. But now I can see it in the game:
The next day we drove back west a bit from Alamogordo so we could go visit the White Sands National Monument. And this shot from the game is pretty much what the visitor center looks like:

Yeah, see, it's that kind of stuff that gives ATS more character. There are a few landmarks in ETS2, some of them even on the side of the road, but for the most part, it feels like a vast empty road network. I think they've spent more time giving ATS local flavor, which is why some of the States are taking so long.

Thanks for the heads up on Canada, that sounds very cool. If it wasn't for my wife's upcoming knee surgery, this summer we were going to drive up from Florida to Canada at Winnipeg, then drive west through Regina, Calgary, Kamloops and on to Vancouver. Following that we were going to go south through Washington and Oregon then head home. If this mod gets released I'll be able to get a preview before the trip next year!

I do know what you mean about GPS tagging of landmarks. That'd be a great feature. I suspect they haven't done that for discovery and achievement purposes, but you would think they'd at least be tagged after the fact.
Can't really help you with mods though, as I run it vanilla aside from some truck mods. The exception will be when Promods Canada is released.

I bought myself a 45 foot flatbed trailer so I could carry cargoes. I seem to be able to make more money this way, although on each of two jobs when I checked the Cargo Market in a city there was only one industry with jobs, both time three jobs with different locations. Still pretty cool. Here I am starting off with a load of fertilizer.

And when arriving at a destination, Geralt GPS sometimes says "Ok, we've arrived. Now drop your load and get out of here." Somehow I find that strangely funny within that context...

I picked this up today on a whim. I played Euro a bit but found the areas kind of boring. I’m totally blown away so far by this one. Seems like a lot more detail and more interesting. Fired up the Beatles radio and I’m driving through the desert at night. Freaking zen as hell.

That's being addressed in an upcoming update, as explained in the post Crossing the gap:
Since the announcement of ETS2 Beyond the Baltic Sea, you have been speculating on how we are going to solve the issue that arises when someone owns a map expansion that is without a direct connection to the base game map (and possibly other map expansions one may have). The release of Washington marks the first time that this has happened in the history of our games (if a player did not already own the Oregon DLC).
Right from the Closed Beta for the 1.35 Update, you've had the option to buy garages online. This is tailored mostly for our seasoned gamers who already have the required number of garages and some spare cash. New players will have to work to unlock this privilege.
For new players who are just getting into our games, we're adding a second option based on a wider range of Quick Job starting locations. This allows for a new trucker to explore any part of the map (enabling one to purchase a garage there) and to then teleport between purchased garages. We hope that this resolves the issue caused by unconnected map expansions for everyone, both for now and for the future.

I see some physics mods (which I assume means truck handling) on the Workshop, but I have no way of knowing which is good.
Are there mods that make the world seem to come more to life?

The only one I use is one that puts a little mirror in the upper right corner of the screen.
If there was one that added wildlife, I'd probably use that.

These are the mods I'm using:
All of the Ford Transit van mods are from one guy and I liked them as they added a little real world flavor, as does "Real Advertisements". The Yandex Navigator just changes the background color and some symbols in the GPS. I used a couple of physics mods in ETS2, but I'm not sure that they really made that much of a difference.
The only mod I really got into was for European Truck Simulator 2 and added the North African coast from Morocco to Egypt. It wasn't in Steam but had to be installed separately. I haven't used it in a couple of years, but it was rather fun, including as it did some really steep mountain passes and a lot of interesting desert scenes, like the below:

The only mods I play with are trucks. I personally like driving older trucks. There are a few on the Steam Workshop, but it can be a little confusing to find them. I'm currently using an International 9800.
As for Physics mods, I feel you don't need one. A few updates ago, SCS greatly improved their own physics, and have added adjustments to truck cab and suspension settings. Putting the slider all the way to the left makes for a more satisfying experience that previously could only be achieved via mods. I used to feel that the physics system made things feel way too light even with heavy cargo, but again the physics overhaul changed this. Physics mods were only really recommended for older iterations. I'm not even sure they'd be updated for the latest versions of the game anymore.

Looks like they're moving right along with new States being added. In other news, the engine is also getting a complete sound overvaul via FMOD implementation.

I hope they're not planning to just keep adding states from west to east, because I feel like gameplay in "flyover country" (forgive me) won't be much different from what we've seen in the mostly rural West Coast routes.
In terms of new features and complexity, they need to get to the Eastern Metropoli.

I think they'll just keep adding onto the western states. If they added states to the east there wouldn't be any connectivity.
My best guess as to the order of the next few states would be Idaho (already announced), Colorado (as hinted), then Wyoming to make the connecting routes from Idaho to Colorado and finishes I-25. Logically the next step/state should be Montana so it makes a nice cohesive block of states, but Montana is pretty empty, so I'm going to say that maybe we'd see Texas next.

They could just do a "mid-west" DLC that goes all the way to Chicago/St. Louis-ish. There's a reason the flyover states are called flyover states...

A north route and a south route would work. There's plenty of changing scenery on the Arizona-New Mexico-Texas-Deep South route.
I imagine the sub-Canadian states would also have enough varied terrain to justify it.
Just stay out of corn country.
