Every time I turn around I'm finding another shout word. How many are there total? I have about 10 now.

Re: Elder Scrolls Skyrim thread

Postby Grifman » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:16 am

I'm just getting into the main quest and the potential political angle was totally unexpected and gives me a lot to think about:

Spoiler:
I was planning on originally being a supporter of the Stormcloaks and Skyrim independence, but after talking with the member of the Blades in Rivenwood, I have a lot to think about. If the Thalmor are behind the dragons, and are supporting the uprising to weaken the Empire, then Skyrim's independence is merely a stalking horse for the Thalmor. Skyrim would be their puppet state with their ultimate goal of dominion over the humans. This is a great angle to the story and adds a lot to it. I'm going to have to see what the Thalmor goal really is before I decide Empire vs. Skyrim.

I'll also add that this is one of the most beautiful atmospheric games I've every played. Walking the high country up to Ivarstead was really a beautiful experience, with the trees and wind rustling through the golden leaves, while coming back down I ran into rain and a snow storm, a heavy heavy snowstorm. Sometimes, I just stop by the road to look over the countryside below but I have to be careful so some bear or troll doesn't sneak up on me! :)

Finished the main quest and the civil war quest. I joined the Empire cause I just couldn't see a Dunmer joining the xenophobic Nords in the stormcloaks

Being a Nord I joined the Stormcloaks. Figured I'll play Empire next time. I also kill all the Thalmor that I can find. I clean out whole keeps of them.

STEAM suggests I've spent 43 hours in Skyrim and that just seems crazy. I'm still banging out random quests, though I did start down the path of the main story. After having a hell of a tough time against

Spoiler:
The dragon Sahloknir

I also thought it was...interesting that after starting this quest, you can actually hear them talking. I want someone to make a mod where they all sound like Bruce from Family Guy.

Anyway, I figured finally heading up to Shearpoint to deal with that problem wouldn't be nearly as difficult (and it wasn't) but I wasn't at all prepared for
Spoiler:
Krosis
coming out of the tomb. Regardless, as a wood-elf scout the treasure he left was completely worth the effort.

Still working fine after the latest round of patches. No CTD or weird glitches in 20+ hours now.

I'm really torn though with where to go next. Bard quests, Dark Brotherhood, Mage School, Civil War... even with so much time invested, the number of options are fantastic.

I also realized that maybe my first 20 or so hours were relatively trouble free (no bugged quests) because all I did was journey from point to point on the surface. Unless I had a specific reason to get into a cave or lair, I just noted it on my map. The really good thing about all that initial exploring is that it's making my questing now much easier as I'm able to fast travel just about everywhere I need to go. So really, I have the best of both worlds -- I was able to address my need to freely explore and just discover new things for 20+ hours and now I can actually work on a story.

So for the Bard quests where you're looking for various lost musical instruments I wasn't able to unload the instruments after completing the quests which suck because they have some weight. That said, those quests were worth it because even though they couldn't pay in coin, the Bards had a reward that was much more useful...

The main Mage quest was useful because...

Spoiler:
At the end you become Arch-Mage and get one of the best rooms in Skyrim! Enchanting table, alchemy table, a bunch of soul gems scattered around, alot of alchemy ingredients.

The irony of this quest is that my dual-wielding axe/swordsman Nord is rather magically challenged, except in enchanting. I'm good at killing mages though which got me through the main Mage quest.

I'm convinced that the new ad slogan for the game should be "Bored of Skyrim? Walk 12 feet." That's what happened to me. I thought I was burned out and needed a break after almost 60 hours of game time and finishing the main quest. Then I logged in and just took a look around before I took a break...only to find myself 2 hours later about halfway across the map finding a new dwarven dungeon that I hadn't seen before and a backlog of about a dozen more quests picked up in Riften along the way.

sigh...

I did take some time to create a Redguard Warrior and a Dark Elf assassin for later though. I hope someone comes up with a character management system that allows you to load from different save folders in the future.

I tried restarting as a mage, but I just couldn't do it. Running around casting fireballs is so f'n boring to me for some reason. I rolled a new high elf and I'm trying to make a super archer of doom, who also duel wields sword. It's a bit slow getting him up to speed, but I could see him tearing through crap at higher levels. I'm taking a person with me until that happens to absorb all the punches.

I'm STILL finding a ton of new stuff that I missed the first time around. Since I know where most of the main quests go I know which places I can go into without borking quests which has led to some more new things discovered. Also I'm wandering off the beaten track even more. It's really loony tunes how much crap they have crammed into this game.

I'm seeing in one of the Wiki guides, they give you the console command to remove the instruments.

I too am bugged and there's no way I'm toting around that crap for free. I also have a bugged journal entry regarding a bounty from the Jarl of Dawnstar. I completed the quest and collected the money but it's still showing up.

Annoying, but not a deal breaker.

Do the various companions have quest content associated with them? I've grown quite fond of Uthgerd the Unbroken, and I'm starting to feel guilty that the two of us are always going on my adventures, and never taking any time to address her interests and/or personal demons.

Thanks Smoove! Unless my character was able to play the lute, drum, etc. I'm no Nord roadie! (Would be cool though if you could play those instruments after becoming a member of the Bard College)

Big huge ditto! Upon seeing my daughter of late, her first question is to ask how Uthgerd is doing. (We collectively refer to Skyrim as my flower picking simulator, but that mostly comes from her watching me play Oblivion on the 360.)

That was my first character with which I beat the game last week. She was an unstoppable bad ass by level 15-20, especially with her high sneak skill.

I'm just running around doing things, level 34, playing as an elf. Got a bunch of quests going on and completed little ones, no major ones yet. I get turned around easy in the towns and can't seem to locate the people that I need to see, get frustrated and just leave to go exploring.

I'm experiencing physical body aches from sitting in one place for too many hours. It's kind of crazy how addicting the game is.

Thanks Grifman :) Actually when my husband was watching me play he said, "Why do you have ALL those quests active? Doesn't that drive you crazy? You should just focus on one thing at a time" and proceeded to show me how to toggle them off. I haven't mastered the reading of the local map yet to figure out levels (floors) making my completion of a task rather challenging. Yes, I still do look at my hands to figure out my left from right in real life, so it's a mental challenge ;)

Funny how your personality sneaks into the character. Example, I have having a hard time telling the common folk to suck it when they ask me to run an errand for them, I don't steal (but boy is it tempting) and I have trained myself to cross my legs when I die so no one sees my coochie. Telling ya, some of the poses the bodies go into... they were either drunk (most likely cause of all the wine and mead around) or very limber, athletic like cause they didn't sit for hours in front of computers!

player.additem [ItemNumber] #
Item number being one of those shown on the code page I referenced. # being the quantity of that item you want. Leave a space after additem and after the itemnumber code.
50,000 gold pieces or 1000 lockpicks can sure make things go easier.

I'm at 50 hours now and I feel like I'm just getting started. That's pretty impressive. The other amazing thing is that I'm bouncing back and forth between miscellaneous quests, faction quests and the main story - and everything is equally as interesting to me. I think that speaks to just how much more effort they put into writing this time around. I finished the Forsworn Conspiracy quest in Markarth and in doing so I stumbled across a "House of Horrors" that kicked off an expected quest line.

As Grifman pointed out, I'm also starting to see it's not just the Stormcloaks versus the Imperials as I once believed. I'm having a similar feeling to when I was playing Fallout New Vegas -- I'm not really sure there is any clear path as things are starting to blend into gray now...

Still loving the sandbox aspect of the game, started with he stormcloaks quest, but otherwise haven't done much questing, just spelunking.

The 360 patch finally came back so I am finally back to really playing!

The backwards flying dragon was forwards flying but after killing him for some reason I didn't get his soul. I think it was just the glitched dragon, but now that it is dead I am just glad he is gone.

In the two hours I played after getting the patch I had something like 5 dragon encounters. 3 random, 1 where I went to kill the dreaded backwards stuck in mountain lighting self on fire one, and one scripted. 3 in two hours is the most random dragons I have ever seen in the game and two of them were ancient which was ridiculously hard to kill. My first ancient dragons. The first attacked solitude so it took a while but because the guards were shooting too so it was still over in decent time. The second attacked while I was just out and about and with no help was extremely difficult to kill off. Thankfully my blood-thirsty mount jumped in to try and help  come on horse stay out of this fight! Ancient dragons are awesome.

It is nice to have resistances back, mages are killable again for me and a frost dragon I ran into could barely touch me (I'm a Norde).

Does anyone know a good place to pick up some black soul gems? I find them here and there but with my soul capturing bow it would be nice to have more of them. Nobody sells them that I have found yet. Any ideas?

Damn, I had a chance to buy a black soul gem from someone, but now I can't remember who. BTW, if you do Azura's quest I'm pretty sure that the reward is a reusable soul gem, but I'm not certain if it will absorb humanoid souls.
