m.2 ssd installation

Post by dobberhd »

I'm trying to install an m.2 ssd into my son's computer. I have all other drives unplugged. When I have the ssd installed, the video won't work. If I take it out, it does.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Nevermind. Figured it out. There are two ports for m.2. If I put it in the one I had it in, it disables the slot for the video card.

Good to be reminded. Forgot about that.

I didn't even know there were two slots...or is it ports?

Some motherboards have multiple m.2 slots. Each one eats up PCIe channels if in use. Sounds like this mobo happens to have a slot that overlaps the main PCIe slot for a video card.

Not all motherboard have M.2 slots share the same pcie lane as the pcie slots. Some chipset has more lanes so the m.2 slots don't share with pcie slots.

Some M.2 slots share with some SATA ports when using SATA mode.
