Re: The Trump foreign policy thread
Anything Trump reads in that tone of voice was written by someone else anyway, and just by listening you can tell he's reading it for the first time. It's clear that he's bored and annoyed at having to praise someone not named Donald Trump.
Even this bit seems lackluster and tired:
"...and to me it will always be called Columbus Day." [flips page, reads words] "Some people don't like that. I do."

Yeah it is like hearing a child read their book report out loud. The difference being that the child has ever read a book.

Agree with Holman. I understood what he meant about western civilization, but it's clear from his delivery that Trump didn't understand or care what he was saying, and he resented having to stand there and read it.

I assume he meant Ancient Rome 1922-1943.
I think the end of the clip is really more significant than the Ancient Rome bit.

Fair enough. My frustration meter was pegged (I had just read that ridiculous letter to Ergodan), and I was too quick to judgement.
I do agree that the general delivery of the entire speech was laughable.

Per Dem aide:
Schumer to Trump: "Is your plan to rely on the Syrians and the Turks?"
Trump: "Our plan is to keep the American people safe."
Pelosi: "That's not a plan. That's a goal."
Well played, Madam Speaker, well played.

Hey, Rip, we're looking pretty strong now, aren't we. Ran from Syria with our tail between our legs. Move was totally unplanned, just read today we had to bomb our own former supply dump because in the rush we had to leave behind a ton of weapons. Also saw a Russian video where Russian troops took over a former US base - it looked like the US left in a rush, totally unorganized retreat, with the Russians virtually mocking the Americans. And now the Saudi's are doubting us because we did nothing when Iran attacked them. So how's this all working out for you now? Think we are still looking strong to the world? How's this working out for you?

You won't get an answer because he would have to admit how wrong he was to vote for Trump. This is something the Trump base simply cannot do. .Grifman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 9:12 am Hey, Rip, we're looking pretty strong now, aren't we. Ran from Syria with our tail between our legs. Re: The Trump foreign policy thread
Trump and Erdogan just announced a "ceasefire" in northern Syria. Actually it's just a 120-hour halt in operations to give the Kurds time to pull out.
In other words, we just signed off on Turkey's illegal invasion and ethnic cleansing of Kurdish territory, and we're supposed to call it a win.

Right, but remember, according to US Senator Rand Paul, the Kurds are better off with Assad than the United States. This is actually what he said.

Re: The Trump foreign policy thread
Especially as the swamp has drained directly into the Administration (and back again, when necessary):
At the halfway mark of President Donald Trump’s first term, his administration has hired a lobbyist for every 14 political appointments made, welcoming a total of 281 lobbyists on board, a ProPublica and Columbia Journalism Investigations analysis shows.
With a combination of weakened rules and loose enforcement easing the transition to government and back to K Street, Trump’s swamp is anything but drained. The number of lobbyists who have served in government jobs is four times more than the Obama administration had six years into office. And former lobbyists serving Trump are often involved in regulating the industries they worked for.
Black Lives definitely Matter Lorini!

Re: The Trump foreign policy thread
Maddow nailed it in regards to this "ceasefire" that was negotiated (and I use that in the loosest possible sense) by Pence and Pompeo.
Sickening way to treat our Kurdish allies.(1) turkey wants to push the kurds out of that part of syria.
(2) trump gives ‘em the OK to invade.
(3) pence brokers a “deal” in which the kurds... must get out of that part of syria.
(4) the US agrees to un-sanction turkey.
that’s a “deal” like being mugged is a deal.

Re: The Trump foreign policy thread
BBC
Turkish presidential sources told BBC Turkish: "President Erdogan received the letter, thoroughly rejected it and put it in the bin."
...
Donald Trump's mixture of threats and locker-room banter infuriated Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. His staff told the BBC that he threw the letter into the bin and launched the Syrian operation the same day. That could be proof there was no Trumpian green light.
It's almost as if people are the problem.
