Series-specific because it starts on Friday.

Friday night at work, wife compiles short list of movies she would like to watch over the weekend. The only time off she has is every other weekend. I note that one of them is listed as Disney + and we would need a subscription. She asks how much, and I tell her $7/mo, $70 per year. Too much, she replies, although she doesn't bother searching Prime or free on Comcrap movies, and her brain-numbing rom-coms cost $4 each to rent.

But we didn't spend any money watching movies yesterday (Sunday). Instead, we go shopping for about 8 grueling hours and she spends $1000 on all new summer clothes for the entire family.

Since summer for us is essentially every other Sunday, that's maybe 7 days max, half or more guaranteed to have bad weather (so more movie rentals probably). Umm...yeah.

In case anyone wasn't clear:
It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The events of the series take place after the film Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Details:
It will consist of six episodes, releasing weekly until April 23.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Thumbs up for the first epsiode. There is some cool action but it is mostly a slow burn. Sam has a family sub-plot that isn't terribly interesting so far. Some insight into the state of the world after End Game.

And no post credits scene for this epsiode.

FWIW my non-Filipina wife does the same thing. Stresses over paying $4 for Starbucks or something but doesn't fret too much about spending a couple thousand to install a new half bathroom. Go figure.

Anyway, looking forward to checking this out tonight. I was probably going to skip it initially, but I got lazy and forgot to cancel Disney Plus after watching WandaVision, so....might as well.

I kind of like the mini-series model that WandaVision and now Falcon seem to be using. I think it helps focus things on telling a coherent story, and should let them use more established stars, since they won't have to be committed to a multi-year show. And it's not like there's going to be a shortage of Marvel content anytime soon.

Just watched it.

Non-spoiler review: Don't worry; it's solidly done. If WandaVision wasn't your thing, this is much more in the vein of Winter Solider/Civil War.

Couple of nice cameos:
Spoiler:
Rhodey!
And George St. Pierre back again getting his butt kicked as Batroc the Leaper

I appreciated that . . .
Spoiler:
While John Walker is a bit of a dick, he's not totally cartoonish like the bad guy S.W.O.R.D. leader in WandaVision was.

In other news, Bucky jumping out of the plane cracked me up.

Bucky is coming across as a bit of a wus. Considering an entire movie was based on his exploits holding off the real Captain, in rather disappointed.

Did they explain how Falcon can throw and catch the shield without super strength?

They showed Hawkeye doing it in Age of Ultron, and John Walker doing it here. Neither have super strength.

I think spider-man sums it up when he said that the shield doesn’t obey the laws of physics. At all.

Still enjoying the show. Sebastian Stan is great, in particular.

Also, is there a reason why there (apparently) isn't a whole military unit using Falcon-like gear? Why is the Falcon's air force assistant dude stuck using ordinary military gear?

The Ringer tells me that in the comics Isaiah's grandson Elijah (who was there with Isaiah) becomes The Patriot as part of the Young Avengers. So we will probably see more of Isaiah and Elijah.

I was unaware of the character’s history with Marvel so I looked him up. Turns out Marvel Unlimited has the entire short series they did back in 2003 (Truth: Red, White and Black) so I added it to my reading list.

Apparently there are rumors that future episodes of Falcon and Winter Soldier are going to reveal that Isaiah was only apprehended by the military after he was mysteriously found stuck to a wall with some paste.

While I liked the action sequences, the humor and some of the investigative plot development re the villains - I experienced zero interest in the personal dramatic arcs of the hero characters. They came across as painfully slow-paced and forced. I just didn't enjoy them and wanted to fast-forward to the "interesting stuff." I'm more interested in an action superhero series than I am a soap opera. FWIW- I don't particularly enjoy the MCU story arc of outlawing superheroes or controlling and regulating them. I feel MCU jumped the shark with the whole Sekovia accords plotline. Ditto for how they are (mis) handling the blip arc so far. So they are starting with a deficit.

But take my opinion with plenty of salt - tastes vary a lot, and mine greatly prefer hard and edgy science fiction to anything I'm likely to find in super-hero territory. For me, superhero movies are all about action and effects and campy super-villains. They lose me when they try to be dramatic. However I enjoy the social commentary and self-examination that I find in more believable sci-fi series. Shrug

One of the MCU podcasts I listen to started talking about the Masters of Evil. The hosts weren't sure who was in the original lineup, so they were googling it. I burst out laughing when one of them said "who the hell is Paste-Pot Pete?"

That is the only time outside of this forum where I've seen or heard that name.
