RIP Neil Peart

Post by Jag »

Just devastating. One of my favorite bands and drummers. Glad I got to see them a bunch of times.RIP

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... ry-936221/
Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for Rush, died Tuesday, January 7th, in Santa Monica at age 67. The cause was brain cancer, which he had been quietly battling for three years, according to Elliott Mintz, a spokesperson for the Peart family. A representative for the band confirmed the news to Rolling Stone.

I was never a Rush fan, but the first time I heard Subdivisions I was blown away by how clean and precise the drumming was. I grew to appreciate Rush quite a bit.

He was one of the drumming greats.

I was just watching "Beyond the Lighted Stage" this week while painting. Jesus. This one hits harder than Bowie or Petty.

Rush was my band as a teen. Seen them many times in concert, made it to their farewell tour. Always held out hope that they may rouse themselves and make one final tour. But now...

Seriously, if you have not watched Beyond the Lighted Stage and are remotely interested in Rush, it is a great documentary. Streaming on Netflix right now.

Yep, did the same thing when my Wife told me.

Then 2112
And now Moving Pictures

Seriously bummed. He was a big figure to me.

I've gotta edit and keep adding...they were my favorite band in Grades 9 to 11 or so...FAVORITE. Never got to see 'em live and that's shitty. I've seen pretty much all my hero bands but never them.

This hits hard. Rush was a huge deal for me just ticked all of the geek boxes.

Discovered them on their Hemisphere's release so was a little late to the game. They came to Jax with UFO opening and my parents wouldn't let me go because it was on a school night (high school that is!). Still have never forgiven them :)

Very fortunate to see them on Permanent Waves in Jacksonville, two nights in a row in Dallas on Signals. Second night third row from the stage, I spent the entire time just watching Neil. Just an amazing talent. Saw them a number of times since that show and was lucky to get down to the farewell tour in Tampa with my wife. Got to say goodbye then and will have to now.

Thank you for all of the memories Neil.

Beyond the Lighted Stage not available to me ... here in Canada. That's gotta change.

Rush was the first band I saw live (opening act: Thundermug) and I did see them a handful of times. As a bass player (even back then), I was always focused on Geddy but all three were ridiculously talented individual musicians who became ever "more" when together. Three. Man. Band. That played like that. That had lyrics that appealed to the burgeoning sci-fi/fantasy nerd in me.

In recent years, the curtain came down and the collective "we" were allowed to see people as themselves instead of simply as performers. Neil's interview with CBC, discussing his book "Far and Near: On Days Like These" was a great glimpse into life on the road and how he looked at the map of where they were and decided: "What's the most excellent thing I can do today?". (Hint: It often a motorcycle trip.)

Funny how these guys have been my favorite band for well over 30 years, and yet I consider myself a relative newcomer to them. I only really started to listen to them in 1985.

I knew when I saw the R40 tour that it would be the last time I saw them play together. I'm glad I got my whole family to go with me.

I had finished listening to the Rio album about an hour before I read this news. I left work an hour late because I stopped and talked with two people about Neil before leaving.

Hemispheres was my favorite album by them; I don't begrudge them for going for the pop payday afterward though. Peart is in my top 10 drummers; had Rush not put an underwhelming show when I saw them circa 1984 he might have made my top 5.

Lord, the list goes on. This isnt even including the last two albums which were outstanding, especially Clockwork Angels.

Buy the album Hemispheres and you have a great start. Zaxxon is right, cant really go wrong with any , except the albums “Hold your fire “ and “roll the bones” I never dug those albums much.

Loved this quote from the RS article:
At one point (as a teen), he got in trouble for pounding out beats on his desk during class. His teacher’s idea of punishment was to insist that he bang on his desk nonstop for an hour’s worth of detention, time he happily spent re-creating Keith Moon’s parts from Tommy.

What is your favorite?
It varies, they have way too many great albums. Maybe Permanent Waves, because it was my first. I think a huge reason why I don't like Hemispheres is Cygnus X1 - it is a pretty amazing piece, but I find it too jarring and unmelodic to my ears. I can understand how Hemispheres could be someone's favorite if they really enjoyed that piece however.

I'd probably recommend one of the Live albums for a n00b, just to make sure they get a drum solo! I didn't have Rush in Rio, so I just grabbed it and will listen on the way home from work tonight ( think I only have Exit Stage Left and A Show of Hands, for Live stuff)!

My favorite underappreciated album by them (post their pop-heyday carryover from Moving Pictures/Signals, but excluding Clockwork Angels) is Presto.

One thing I found for me about Rush, was that you really needed to give any album by them multiple listens, they would vary their musical styles so much from album to album that it would take a bit of an investment to truly grasp what they were doing in a new album. It may just be that I never gave Hemispheres enough of that chance, the Trees and La Villa Strangiato are two of my favorites, so I don't think so.

Roll the Bones is probably my second least favorite Rush album, FWIW.
