I have never seen a Rambo movie. No real desire to, tbh.

First Blood wasn't horrible. I only saw the first 'sequel', and it was pure 80s hero worship action film fluff. I saw it in the theater when I was... 12, probably, and loved it, probably because I was 12 and a GI Joe/A-Team fan. I have no illusions as to how it would hold up today.

Re: [Film] Rambo: Last Blood - Sep 20 2019
Honestly, I never saw anything past First Blood in the 80s, which if you actually watch it is almost the antithesis of the rest of the series. I did watch the reboot from a few years ago and, I'm embarrassed to say, enjoyed it. Which is why I'll watch this most likely. It's mindless and dumb, but there's an almost zen like quality to the...Blackhawk wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 11:43 am First Blood wasn't horrible. Re: [Film] Rambo: Last Blood - Sep 20 2019
The main thought that pops into my head is, "why?" And, why that title? First blood is an expression. Last blood... is not. It sounds stupid. I get it, but it's stupid.
I saw First Blood probably 15 years ago when I was exploring film and catching up on all the "classic" stuff I was too young to have encountered previously. It was worthwhile. Historically relevant. And I had memories of my dad talking about the film being an outlet for him while working night shift when I was tiny. I think he recorded it to VHS from pay-per-view. I remember seeing the cassette on the shelf and wondering what it was.
I skipped the 80s sequels because they looked ludicrous and were so poorly reviewed.
I did see Rambo (i.e. "4", 2008) though... about all I can remember is that it was hysterically violent. I don't think it actually happened, but I seem to recall a scene from the film or trailer in which it looked like Stallone clean punched a guy's head off.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Re: [Film] Rambo: Last Blood - Sep 20 2019
While punching a guy's head off did not happen, he did use a .50 caliber machine gun to disintegrate approximately 17,000 people in one scene.
I honestly can't justify my desire to see this. So I'll just continue using the only emoji that's appropriate for me in this conversation.

I do seem to recall that the director's previous film Get the Gringo was "OK", so maybe it's got that going for it? I mean, if you can make Mel Gibson likeable for 96 minutes....

No, we will not judge.
But we will remember. When he comes along to mock our films and shows, we will remember Rambo. That may sound petty but he drew first blood.

The last Rambo was great. It was John Wick before John Wick. The violence was unapologetically over the top, something he did well with the first two Expendables.
Stallone is on a roll lately and you need to get on board.

I dunno, man.
Corrupt local thugs (OK fine)
U.S. government soldiers (er, well...)
North Vietnamese (in the 1980s?)
Soviet Russians (in... 1988?)
Sinister Burmese (sinister Burmese?)
and now Mexican gangs (because MAGA?).
I can't help but think that there are categories at work here that aren't really useful for exploring heroism, masculinity, and necessary violence, and (hey reallllly) they might actually be the opposite. Just a thought.
Rambo has battled and ultra-violently overcome:Wikipedia wrote:In the film Rambo: Last Blood, John Rambo has returned home to Bowie, Arizona to live out his quiet life on his horse farm, left to him by his father. A reporter named Carmen Delgado comes to Rambo for his help after her half-sister, Gabrielle, is kidnapped in Mexico by a drug cartel, led by Hugo Martinez. Rambo is reluctant to go back to fighting, feeling that he has finally moved past the war but he cannot say no because, when somebody asks for his help, he helps.

Are you saying you don't think John Rambo's politics are left wing?

Have you not been reading what I write? I’m mocking it myself.
And I’ll still mock anyone who enjoys the Underworld movies, then if you call me out for watching Rambo, I’ll just agree with you that it sucks.

I remember a tabloid headline in the 80s begging Stallone to "stop kicking Soviet's butts" because it was hurting the peace efforts.
Let's not forget that Rocky IV ended the Cold War.

That is 100% true. The soviets had no choice but to embrace democracy after their people started cheering for Rocky.

The first Underworld falls squarely into the "so bad it's good" category. It's a ridiculous showcase for style over substance, and I could watch it a hundred more times.hepcat wrote:And I’ll still mock anyone who enjoys the Underworld movies, then if you call me out for watching Rambo, I’ll just agree with you that it sucks.

Few things here...hepcat wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2019 12:53 pm Off topic, but I was pleasantly surprised with Mel Gibson in Blood Father.
edit: forgot to add
1. Gibson was excellent and I enjoyed Blood father way more than I expected to.
2, I never saw the recent Rambo but totally will before this comes out.
3. Holy shit there's a Rambo cartoon? How'd I miss that?

Turbo was voiced by James Avery, the Dad from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. He was also Shredder in TMNT.

And the reviews....are not looking good.
- Hollywood Reporter"The screenplay, co-written by Stallone and Matthew Cirulnick, feels utterly tossed-off and generic, more resembling the pilot for a Rambo television series than a proper sendoff. Dirty Harry got a more dignified farewell in The Dead Pool, and that movie featured a chase involving a toy car...

Sounds about right. I would rather watch a CW show than another Rambo. OK, more realistically I think I would run away if offered either, but I would run somewhat slower from the CW show.
