It used to be a good time to be a DC fan (Flash, Arrow, films, etc)

I would be intrigued in a storyline where Dick Grayson moves on from Robin and becomes Nightwing. I think there could be some good stuff there. But the "F*** Batman" line was just terrible.

He was acting too dickish, and not Dickish at all. They got their Jason Todd in our Dick Grayson.

The New Teen Titans was the only DC title I followed for years during my comic book days in the late 70's early 80's, and I loved it. But this trailer bears no resemblance to the comic I knew. The animated kids show from about 15 years ago was much, much more like the comic. But DC seems to be locked in on a bad formula: Bad casting, not enough top tier actors, bad direction, blurry action sequences, too little humor and way, way too dark.

Judging from the trailer, I wouldn't watch this movie if you paid me.

Series, not a movie. And it's supposed to be the flag that launches DCs new streaming service. The overwhelming response from non-DC fans has been, "That looks terrible." The response from DC fans has been worse.

That trailer aside, I think I’ll be subscribing to the DC Universe service. I just found out they’re going to have a library of thousands of comics available to read (like the Marvel Unlimited service), as well as HD versions of Batman Animated and other classics. For 75 bucks a year, I think it’s well worth it (so far).

With last fall’s Justice League proving to be yet another critical and financial disappointment for Warner Bros., the studio has embarked on a string of tumultuous shakeups, which includes the departure of Ben Affleck as Batman.

More importantly to fans, THR’s report also announced that Matt Reeves had handed in a first draft of his upcoming standalone Batman movie, and it apparently focuses on a younger caped crusader. This, in turn, means that after years of back-and-forth rumors, Ben Affleck is on the verge of being replaced in the role. Batfleck, we hardly knew you.

It’s a shame Cavill didn’t work out, but this could be a good thing. I really like him in other non-DCEU movies, and yet really dislike his Superman.

I don’t know how you “fix” the DCEU at this point. You can’t do a complete reset. I guess the only thing they can do at this point is keep with the individual films and don’t go back to a big team-up film for a couple of years.

I've seen this one go back and forth between true and not true so many times my head's spinning. The latest bit is that him he's producing The Batman, but checking himself into rehab again has made him so expensive to insure that no studio would be able to hire him. Who knows at this point? I follow DC news every day, and I still don't now for sure.

As fascinating as a Joker origin story can be it can't carry an entire movie for me. It's missing, I don't know, some dude in a bat costume fighting crime or something.

The comics Joker has never been done well on screen. Nicholson's was a little too Batman '66, mean, cheesy humor and not much else. Ledger's was just a psychotic mob boss without the manic twisted humor. Leto's was a psychotic gangsta. That's not to say that none of them were good characters. Some of them were amazing. But none of them have been a good rendition of The Joker. Nobody has ever manged to pull off the blend of lunatic criminal and circus clown portrayed in the comics.

Anyway, there are ways that this can be done really, really well. The concept is sound, and Batman is the last thing it needs. A Joker origin story should be a Fiasco-like urban tragedy about a pitiable failed comedian going off the deep end. Taxi Driver meets Breaking Bad, seen through the eyes of a comedian as imagined by Quentin Tarantino.

A recent issue from DC comics brought up a really interesting perspective on the Joker. He wants Batman around. He needs Batman around. It's implied that he knows exactly how insane he is, and he knows that, if left to his own devices, he'd come up with something that would wipe out the world - and he knows just how horrible that would be. And yet he's too insane not to try. He needs Batman specifically to make sure that he fails in whatever he tries. He doesn't kill Batman as a form of self-sabotage, as he's the only who keeps him in check.

None of the Jokers we've seen were that character.

We must have seen different versions of The Dark Knight.

Anyway, Grant Morrison had a great take on the Joker in his graphic novel Arkham Asylum. He created a Joker that woke up each day and decided on his persona. He was a blank slate until he made that choice. It was intended to explain the varying depictions of the character throughout his years in comics.

Interesting bit from the Arrowverse. They just cast LaMonica Garrett as...
Spoiler:
The Monitor
for the crossover.

That brings the possibility that they may...
Spoiler:
...merge their universes - Arrow/Flash/Legends plus Supergirl and Black Lightning.
At the same time, they've titled it 'Elseworlds', which also suggests that it may not be permanent.

Ok, saw the first episode. I'm... cautious. Yes, everyone's a dick. Even Dick's a dickish dick. If they play it that way, it'll suck. On the other hand, if they use that as the basis from which to grow the characters, I think it could work. I've seen other Teen Titans stories based around the idea that the team members are troubled, and it isn't until they get together for support that they start to get a handle on their own issues.

It’s trying too hard to be gritty and dark. They force f bombs into as many sentences as they can in some misguided attempt to sound adult (another reason they dropped the “Teen” from “Teen Titans” I’m assuming). If it were better written I might be able to look past all that. But it’s not so I can’t.

Re: Titans. I'm not sure. I'm a fan of the comic, so I know all the big reveals they keep teasing already, which makes it tough for me to really judge it. I'm enjoying it, but I can definitely see the flaws. They seem to be trying hard to play up the 'angsty teens who find family in each other' angle a lot.
