Irishman is out, and it's a bit weird seeing the younger De Niro and Pesci act. It's distracting, especially when De Niro's character is bashing someone's face in with his feet... Young head, old body

I'm an hour into Irishman (it's hard to find three consecutive hours to watch a film), but I liked the way he kicked the guy's face. I didn't see it as an old actor's physical limitations, but rather as a character who is unsure how severely to beat someone because he's new to this life. It was hesitation and not age.

I sat through the whole thing, would have liked more Keitel and less Pacino. It was OK, but nothing to shout saluti over.

I watched the Irishman on Friday. I thought it was good but not great. Part of that is the movie could have been a little better, the story could have been tightened up and the run time cut down; I also think part of it is after the Godfather, 1-3, and Goodfellas, and Casino and Once Upon a Time in America, and A Bronx Tale and ..... it's a little played out.

I thought De Niro was great, I particularly enjoyed watching him after seeing him in some films over the past few years I didn't enjoy so much. Pacino I could barely tolerate, as usual, he consistently has to turn everything up to 11 now a days. His always on intensity is getting grating, to me.

For me the star of the movie was Pesci, good lord where has this guy been. Gone was the fast talking frenetic Joe Pesci. I get that was the character in Goodfellas, but I felt like that was the delivery Pesci gave for everything I saw him in after that. His portrayal in the Irishman was fantastic, quiet, under spoken, with moments of intensity that truly worked, unlike Pacino. He was able to convey volumes with a look and a nod, I totally forgot I was watching Joe Pesci act and absolutely believed I was watching someone named Russel Bufalino whenever he was on the screen.

I finished The Irishman tonight. I loved it. It will take time before I declare it a classic. I appreciate the film because I grew up with many of the actors and some of my favorite all-time movies included them. I felt right at home with the story. I will be watching it many times I'm sure and thankful it was made.

The aging thing was not a distraction. Hardly ever noticed it.

This was my take as well.

One thing that threw me was the makeup they used to make 76 year old DeNiro look decades younger. It looked odd to me. Heck, the makeup jobs used throughout the film seemed off to me. But that was purely a cosmetic detail that took me out of the story a few times, and not a legitimate complaint about the film's story.

But I did have issues with the story. It was at most, a 2 hour film stretched to 3 1/2 in my opinion. That gave rise to a lot of things that felt more like Scorsese trying to cram in cameos than actually trying to advance the narrative.

As you said, it was good...but it just pales in comparison to other crime epics from his past like Goodfellas or Casino.

Finished the Irishman last night. I really liked it, especially the last half of the film. De Niro and Pesci were very good and Scorsese made some choices that really worked for me (e.g.

I thought having no music from the time De Niro's character gets on the plane to kill Hoffa until he gets off the plane after killing Hoffa was particularly effective.
The de-aging thing didn't bother me too much or, at the very least, I got used to it quickly. The bigger thing I noticed were De Niro's eyes, which seemed to be colored green?

Blue. For some reason they gave De Niro blue eyes. This threw me at first as well and I actually Googled it. I am guessing the real Frank Sheeran had blue eyes and they thought it was important to convey that in the character.

Huh. For some reason they always looked green to me. Either way, even though I suppose the eye coloring wasn't really part of the de-aging, they were what most distracted me.

The Irishman was a slow burn. The ending wasn't anything flashy, but was powerful and I really enjoyed it.
Spoiler:
"We did all we could do for that man."

That was the first time in a gangster movie where I felt the same punch in the gut that the character did when he knew that his friend was about to die.
Whoa - I just realized that the actor that played Provenzano (he also played Capone in Boardwalk Empire) is English. It always amazes me to see actors get so into character that you are totally fooled about the actor themselves.

Yeah, that actor and fellow Brit Eddie Marsan are two of my favorite character actors. They just disappear into their roles.

Coming at the end of January:

I'm like halfway through S1 still and kinda stalled out. I feel like I should like this more than I do. Not sure what's not working for me. Maybe it's just darker and heavier than what I'm looking for.

I watched the first season but was never super enthusiastic about it and never bothered watching the second season. It just all seemed pretty generic WB-ish to me.

It's the furthest thing from that. It's closer to Joss Whedon's Buffy and Angel series than anything else I've come across. It was one of the best things to air on Netflix in 2018. Equal parts creepy and funny, it wasn't afraid to do its own thing. Can't wait for it come back.

As a Buffy/Angel lover... no. It has none of the humor, dialog, charm, action, really anything that made Buffy great (and Angel good).

I like Sabrina, but I can't see any parallel to the Buffy-verse except for the supernatural setting. If my wife wasn't a fan I probably wouldn't bother watching it.

I mean "closer to Joss Whedon's Buffy and Angel series than anything else I've come across" is probably true, but it's a wide gap.

I've considered your opinion and deem it wrong. It absolutely does have the humor, charm, and action. The dialog I might give you a pass on, but everything else? Nah, you're wrong. :P

I announced I was going to cancel our Netflix account since I never watch it. Everyone started screaming at once, naming off their favorite Netflix shows. I guess the rest of the household does watch. It gets a reprieve. I still won't watch though.

I am embarrassed (not embarrased) by how much I love Sabrina. Michelle Gomez alone makes that show awesome. The implication that it isn't humorous is ridiculous - it's hilarous.

I would say it's both humorous and creepy, in equal parts. I agree it's not laugh out loud hilarious, but it certainly isn't a serious piece of drama. Watching Gomez chew scenery though has made me chuckle out loud a few times. She's so damn great at anything she does. I remember watching her outtakes as Missy from Dr. Who and she's just as silly and carefree as you'd think after watching her perform.

I'm also in the pro-Sabrina camp. And also as a huge Buffy/Angel fan (I've watched both entire series I think 2-3 times each, and individual eps more), I would say Sabrina is the closest in overall quality/tone we've had. Teen Wolf was the only other series I can think of that gave me the same feels. I will say it wasn't until the second half/third (I don't remember exactly when) of season one that it really hooked me. There was that great feeling I had when a series really hits its stride.

I have laughed out loud numerous times at Sabrina. Not just at Michelle Gomez either. Both of her aunts' interactions are priceless. And Richard Coyle is also very funny at times. Of course I am predisposed to laugh at him due to him having been on Coupling before.

I'm a little confused. They looked like they were playing it straight and scary/creepy ala Bram Stroker's Dracula movie from the 90's. Right up until Dracula shows up at the end, now I'm not sure if serious? He came off kinda campy. Still intrigued, just confused.
