You've likely had cheap, awful mixing gins. As with just about anything else liquor related, once you have a quality product and can taste the difference, it changes everything. Gin is magic. Not the same as Scotch magic, but magic nonetheless. At the risk of sounding like JeffV, life is too short to suffer with cheap liquor.

Good gin tastes like fresh juniper berries -- a flavor you don't find anywhere else. Berkshire Mountain Distillers' Ethereal gin is delicious straight up.

But yeah, most gin tastes like lighter fluid.

I was wondering if the issue of gin, the lower class and 18th century England would come up but had no clue the print included above was a thing and in the British Museum to boot.

I bought a bottle of Laphroaig. I had one drink and found it to be the worst tasting thing I've ever had. Some of the reviews say "mediciney" which if that means it tastes like iodine they are correct. My cupboard is full of whiskey that I really like (Monkey Shoulder (a scotch whiskey I really like), Elijah Craig Small Batch, Jameson's, Four Roses Single Barrel, Redbreast 12, Rock and Rye, a couple of local whiskey's, and Screwball peanut butter whiskey (for people who don't like whiskey). I've tried the Laphroaig 10 a few times and every time it tastes like iodine and only iodine.

I'm not a fan of Laphroaig or Ardbeg or any of the heavily peated drinks, but "medicinal" is not a word I'd use to describe it. It tastes like you're drinking a campfire (a more pleasant description) or drinking from an ashtray (a less pleasant, but equally accurate description). But medicinal? No.

You're likely on overload. "Medicinal" comes from the iodine/salt/phenol flavor/taste. Your brain is probably reacting immediately to the feeling like you're drinking a campfire to pick up on anything else going on, IMHO. Took me a long, long time to appreciate the greatness that is Islay. Now it's my go-to.
