So tonight was the annual 2/4 mile run in conjunction with a craft beer and indie music fest in my tiny little town. This is the third year my kids and I attended. Two years ago, I was pushing them in a double stroller, and getting lots of sympathetic comments from other runners/observers. Last year, my boy whined most of the way...not the most pleasant experience. Wife and MiL participated and pushed the then-1 year old in a stroller. This year, my 2 year old ran nearly a half-mile, and the 5 year old was tearing it up for about 3/4 mile before cramps stopped him. I tried to keep up, but I really didn't want to spill my beer. At one point, my son waited for my daughter to catch up with him and tried to run holding her hand (they were still a good city block ahead of me at that point). When I encouraged him to run ahead of me to cross the finish line first (it was a timed event), he said no, hold my hand and we will finish together.

He can be so sweet when he wants to be.

I've been using a Garmin with HR monitor built in to track all my runs for the last 18 months. Last year, I routinely hit 155-159 bpm on my runs. This year it is a struggle to break 150, although it doesn't seem that I've lost any speed.

The internet tells me that for my age (46), my maximum HR is 174 and I should train between 50-85% of that (87-149 bpm). I guess this means I'm doing it right, but it's like a light switch was flipped.

On the flip side, I've seen resting heart rates as low as 49, although the lowest one it has recorded is 53 (probably a time averaging thing). I'm pretty sure this is a good thing.

On the flip-flip side, we have a BP measurement machine at work that is routinely calibrated and I've taken enough readings to know I'm around 132/87 - which is concerning.

In summary, anatomy is weird and getting old sucks.

Anyone have anti-chafe solutions they'd like to share?

My long run this weekend was 18.5 miles and it was hot (77F), so I sweated a lot. I used Body Glide in the usual places, but it failed. I didn't even realize it until I got in the shower and then whole regions felt like they were on fire. The biggest problem seems to be the lining of my shorts rubbing - both the elastic portions (practically sawed through my leg), and the netting itself rubbing on the sensitive bits.

Can you rub petroleum jelly directly on the chafing bits of your shorts? It'd be kinda icky, but better than chafing.

That would be the very last resort because I'm not sure it would work and it would permanently stain anything it touches.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

Have you ever tried compression shorts (or know anyone who has)? It would be nice to have something that stayed in place but slipped easily against itself.

Not generic compression shorts like bikers wear, but I do have some running shorts with a compression inner piece which does seem to help.

For me it's more a function of my weight; if I'm where I want to be I just don't have chafing issues, while when I'm 5-15 lb over that (like now), I have to worry about it.

I used to run in bike shorts occasionally. They are designed to keep sweat off your skin, keeps you dry and the spandex keeps your junk from sloshing around. Just don't defeat the purpose and wear underwear with them. No chafing problems at all, but be sure NOT to wear gel shorts...those will feel like you've dropped a load.

Nice. That is an impressive number considering it's only August. I'm sitting at 567 out of my goal of 800. Have been set back by achilles tendinitis since late Feb. Took virtually all of June off after fighting through it for a half-marathon in the spring. Pain came back as soon as I started back in July. The doc gave me a bunch of exercises which I've been doing, and I'm now in a bit of an equilibrium where I can run but my weekly mileage isn't where I'd like it to be.

Achilles issues are no joke, y'all. Can't wait until this is behind me.

Hmm I've probably hit 100 miles this year... maybe. Hahahaha no. I just checked runkeeper. 45.6 miles for the year. Well behind last year's 95 miles. I should maybe stop calling myself a runner. Pace is 20 seconds faster than last year, but that's likely due to ONE run last year and it is all Zaxxon's fault.

Last month I ran about 4 blocks chasing the dog. I've almost caught my breath.

I am so out of shape...dreaming of the day when I can once again have some time for myself. About the closest thing I managed this year was multitasking listening to audiobooks while cutting the lawn.

That sounds horrible. Hope you've got it all figured out now and are on the mend.

My goal for the year was 1500 miles which I thought was a decent increase over last year, but still doable. Then in April I got told I had high cholesterol, so I upped my workouts and changed my diet. I started losing weight (very slowly). My weekly mileage broke 50 miles/week for the first time in my life at the end of June. By July I realized I had a pretty good base and could probably do the October marathon in our area. This week I should break 60 miles/week and I'll have about 238 miles in August. I should have no trouble hitting 1500 miles if I don't get hurt. Today was my 88th consecutive running day and 201st run of the year.

In terms of marathon training, two weeks ago I finished 18.5 miles in 2:59:54 (9:45 min/mile) in 78F and 70% humidity. Last weekend I did 14.5 miles in 2:07:09 (8:47 min/mile) in 69F and 55% humidity. I now think a sub 4:00 marathon is doable if I don't get hurt and the weather is decent. I still have about 7 more weeks to train before a two week taper.

In terms of cholesterol, I was 193 LDL (263 total) on April 16th. By June 19th, I was 173 LDL (235 total). I get tested again on Sept 19th and hope to see 157 LDL. My personal goal is 150 LDL by the end of the year and then tackle getting below 135 LDL in 2020. Otherwise I may end up on pills - which isn't the end of the world, but staying off them is currently my motivation so I'm pretending like it would be to keep me going. :)

Hit 1501.6 miles today. Tomorrow I was supposed to do a 10-miler on the first cool morning in over a month, but I have my next blood test instead (cholesterol check). A little bummed, but that just means I'm going to have a ton of energy for Friday's run.

The other upside of getting the blood test out of the way is that with the Patriots game not on local tv (meaning I have to go to the bar), I won't have to watch what I eat on Sunday! (I suspect I'm not looking at that the right way, but FOOTBALL!!!) :D

Thanks. :)

I'm trying to run a sub-4 hour marathon. A guide I found said to follow the 53/47% rule - 53% of the distance in the first 2 hours, 47% in the second half. It says to run the first 13 miles at a 8:30 pace, 13-20 at a 9:30 pace so you hit mile 20 just under 3 hours. Then you have 1 hour to run 6.2 miles.

My 20 miles runs these past few weeks had left me discouraged as they went from 3:10-3:20, but it was also high 70s and humid for those runs. Today it was 58F and I finished 12.34 miles at 1:46:00 (8:35 pace) and still felt good. Several miles I ran sub 8:30, but that just made up for the two 1 minute walks to eat energy gummies (I didn't really need them, but want to keep the training as much like the race as possible, so I used them). So now I'm thinking it might be possible after all. 5 weeks left.

Over the past 6 months I've been trying to get myself into running regularly. Part of the problem has been the overabundance of work and deadlines and the other part was lack of willpower.

Somehow things started to gell a month ago when I finally completed a full 3 miles in one run - I think it took about 38 minutes. Prior to that I've been limiting myself to seeing how far I could run in 30 minutes, partly because I didn't think I could make it all the way to three miles, and partly because I've been limiting my workout to 30 minutes so it didn't cut into my work time. Anyway, a few days later I proved to myself that it wasn't a fluke and did another 3 mile run (again 38 minutes). Fast forward to last week when I was able to run 11 miles over 7 days, then this week where I've run 8 miles so far.

I'm still trying to develop a steady schedule. I think I'm settling on the following, based on what I did this week and plan to do on Saturday:
Monday - 3.1 mile run (i.e. 5k)
Tuesday - 1 mile run (at a faster pace than 3 miler) + weight training afterwards
Wed - rest
Thursday - 3.1 mile run
Friday - 1 mile run at faster pace + weight training
Sat - hills

For the hill training I figure I'd follow this video's advice:
Hill Running Workout for Beginners

For short-mid term goals I'm hoping to get my 5k time down to 30 minutes. That's what I ran on my very last cross-country race in high school. Yes that's a slow pace for cross-country, but our team sucked and the coach was more into getting us to improve our personal bests rather than being focused on competitiveness. He was very encouraging and so happy that I kept improving my time with each race.

That's great Raydude! And Stessier - you're insane man. Congrats on the great running year you're having!

My next marathon is in about 3 weeks. Going to knock Connecticut off my list. I'll finish, but my time will probably be slow. I need to be out running on the streets more, and get off the treadmill. Such a difference in the conditioning.

In terms of the year - I should be able to meet my goal of 1000 miles. Hopefully, I won't be cramming miles during that last week like I did in 2018. :D

Saturday is the marathon...maybe.

We have been in a bit of a drought. I ran 103 straight days from June 2 through September and had to run inside twice for rain. I started tapering two Sundays ago - had to run inside (13.5 miles on a treadmill - ugh) because of rain. Then 3x last week because of rain. Then this Sunday again (only 10 miles though - much nicer). Now it's supposed to rain tomorrow, then Friday-Wednesday. What is going on here!?!?!?

Right now the forecast is calling for 40% chance of AM showers on Saturday. The race starts at 6:15am. As long as it is only showers, and not just "Rain", I'll try it. But if it is supposed to rain the whole time, I'm out. I know I can finish a marathon - this is about trying to break 4 hours.

I'm not really sure how it is going to go, even assuming good weather. I've never really tapered before and don't know if I trust the process. :) I've felt great at the end of each of my runs and have to hold myself from going faster, but will it really feel like that on race day? And will I bonk? Estimates of my finishing time are between 3:57-4:09. I've got a plan, I guess I just have to trust it...but the unknown is scary.

My PR for a marathon is 4:27:19, so at worst, I have a really good shot at besting that. :)

Edit: Oh, and I was able to get in 5x 20+ mile runs, which makes me the most trained I've ever been. It would really stink for all that effort to get rained out.

Good luck! Sounds like you're in a great position to do well.

Agreed on the 13 miles on a treadmill thought. Anything above 7 or 8 and I start to die inside.

Unfortunately I'm still dealing with my achilles issue. The exercises seemed to help a bit but only if I kept my mileage down below what I like to do. Also, my left achilles started bothering me very slightly (likely due to the fact that I was working it out via the exercises intended to strengthen the right one). So I have taken the past two weeks off from running again, and am doing the same this week. Just trying to rest it to the extreme while continuing to do the unsupervised PT exercises.

I can tell you that this injury is the largest pile of horseshit I've ever had to deal with. I wouldn't wish it on my worst running enemy.

I signed up for a 5K this coming Sunday.

I started the Spartan classes back in March and finished a Spartan Sprint in April, and kept with it fairly consistently over the summer. Unfortunately, when both kids started soccer this fall it required me to miss class for the past 7-8 weeks. While I tried to keep running during that time, I've pretty much gone back to square one in terms of cardio.

I'm hoping this race will kickstart me back into high gear. I don't expect it will be easy or much fun given my extended break from cardio. :D

Good luck on the marathon, Stessier! Rainy weather just sucks. I had a streak of rainy events a few years back and it was miserable. It would be great weather during the training weeks and then just tank come the race. Hope things clear for you! Breaking 4 hrs is no joke. I did it a handful of times when I was younger, and will probably never see it again. /sigh But it sounds like you're at least in line for a nice PR either way!

I ran the Hartford Marathon last weekend. Weather was perfect - 50s and overcast. Course was pretty flat and uneventful. I paced about 2 hrs for the first half of the race, and then gradually slowed the rest of the time. I was hoping for 4:15, as I thought it was doable, and the 4:05 and 4:10 pacers passed me. Not seeing the 4:15 group, I was crossing my fingers as I approached the finish line, but it was not to be. I ended up with a 4:22:34, which was still my best time since 2017. So that's good? (I'm guessing the 4:15 pace group got lost? lol)

21st marathon and 19th state - in the books. Next up Arizona in February.

Wow, Zax, that sounds horrible. Hope the rehab continues to go well.

Good luck on Sunday YK! Hope you don't get any of the rain that seems to be headed our way.

Baroquen - you're nuts! I can't imagine running that many. Congrats on the recent PR, though. Hope the training for the next one is going well.

I decided to sign up and just picked up my bib. Looks like there is a 20% chance of rain every hour from now until tomorrow at noon (race starts at 6:15am) with a total accumulation of 0.25" predicted by Saturday night. So even worst case, it shouldn't be too bad. Starting to get excited. It's going to be hard to sleep tonight - the tapering (and thus decreased physical exhaustion) is not going to help on that front.

I can tell you that this injury is the largest pile of horseshit I've ever had to deal with. I wouldn't wish it on my worst running enemy.
Yep, I hear you. I partially tore my Achilles tendon a year and a half ago, and it never fully recovered. Developed into non-insertional achilles tendinosis in BOTH legs - injured for obvious reasons, and uninjured due to compensating for so long. Just finished yet another round of PT, and my orthopedist has me doing Alfredson's protocol exercises...indefinitely.

I developed Achilles tendinitis a couple years ago due to jumping around too much for P90X. When I spoke with a podiatrist I know about it, her recommendation was 6 weeks of strict rest and stretching, not doing anything to irritate or injure it further. I took the time off from running and jumping around, and substituted biking to avoid totally sitting on my ass. Luckily, it's resolved and I haven't had a problem with running since.

Unfortunately, Achilles injuries heal very slowly due to generally poor blood supply. That's why having a tear is such a big deal. Even prolonged tendonitis is a problem because that inflammation can lead to calcification that ultimately weakens the tendon and increases the chances of tear or rupture. It's really not something to push too hard...taking time to let it heal and finding another form of exercise for a while may be frustrating, but it's probably worthwhile in the end.

It was pretty much a nightmare - and like any good dream, it started happily enough.

I got good sleep the night before and had all my stuff ready to go. Got to the start line in plenty of time. It was 64F and a bit humid, but very little wind - so comfortable and considering my training runs, absolutely within the comfort zone. My plan was to follow the 47/53 plan - try to hit the half marathon in 1:52:30 (8:30 min/mile pace), then miles 13-20 at a 9:30 min/mile pace (hitting mile 20 at 3:00) leaving me one hour to run 6.2 miles (9:40 min/mile pace).

With the nice weather and relatively sparse field (only 257 runners), it was easy to find my pacer and fall in behind the 3:45 marathon target. I was surprised how easy it was to keep pace through the first nine miles. I even was able to eat my gels on the run (during training I would walk for one minute so I could chew them) and stop just long enough to down a cup of water at the aid stations. At mile 10, the first sign of trouble occurred as I got a random cramp in my right thigh. It passed quickly and I thought it odd so I slowed down a bit, but I really wasn't too worried. Oh, what a fool I was.

Miles 10-13 were thought Furman University and were a bit hillier than the beginning, so even though I slowed down a bit, I hit mile 13 at 1:53:26. Not bad at all. I shook off the right arm cramp that came out of nowhere and got through Mile 14 in 9:06. Unfortunately, the wheels then proceeded to fall completely off.

My split times
Spoiler:
Mile 1 - 8:24
Mile 2 - 8:21
Mile 3 - 8:25
Mile 4 - 8:30
Mile 5 - 8:25
MIle 6 - 8:31
Mile 7 - 8:36
Mile 8 - 8:36
Mile 9 - 8:38
Mile 10 - 9:01
Mile 11 - 9:36
Mile 12 - 9:11
Mile 13 - 9:13 - 1:53:26
Mile 14 - 9:06
Mile 15 - 10:18
Mile 16 - 9:36
Mile 17 - 10:25
Mile 18 - 11:14
Mile 19 - 12:04
Mile 20 - 11:59
Mile 21 - 12:12
Mile 22 - 12:54
Mile 23 - 15:03
Mile 24 - 16:07
Mile 25 - 13:56
Mile 26 - 16:03
Mile 26.2 - 15:27
Mile 15 featured a rather steep hill and on the way down, my right leg cramped bad. I tried running through it, but I remember noticing I was compensating by more or less slapping my feet rather than running simply to avoid tumbling down the hill. I pretty much walked up the other side. Mile 16 was cramp free, but Mile 17 on was the nightmare. My right thigh would cramp then my right shin. I believe out of sympathy, my left thigh would cramp and then, not to be left out, my left shin. I would walk to recover, start to jog, and then it would happen again within 0.25-0.5 miles. By Mile 23, all I could do was walk. I watched as my target finish time passed, then the 4:15 time, then finally the 4:30 time around Mile 24. I thought I could catch her and managed to run for a full 0.25 miles, but my legs were wracked with cramps again. In the end, all I could do was walk the last mile including the file 0.2 miles around the inside of the ballpark with the finish line with my kids trying to cheer me on. This was a particularly low point. I finished in 4:36:17.

As I was walking/hobbling to the car afterwards, I noticed my left ankle was particularly painful. I hadn't rolled it and thought it was just a muscle thing. I spent the afternoon massaging my legs, but that night I had real trouble sleeping because of the painful left ankle. Sunday I woke up to a very swollen ankle. I still don't know how it happened. It never happened during any of the training runs (up to 21.5 miles). Today it is somehow even more swollen.

I'm wearing a brace today. It doesn't hurt, but I have no range of motion due to all the swelling. My thighs are still a bit sore and I hold on to the table when lowering myself into a chair just to be safe, but otherwise I'm doing fine. It's pretty depressing to first miss my goal after all that training, then being too injured to get back in the saddle to try again.

So, what have I learned? I think I started out too fast. I think I should have tried to follow my training runs closer and go out closer to 8:45-8:50 for the first 13 miles. This would have meant doing 9:10-9:15 for the next 7, but I'd done that with ease during training. I also don't think I was drinking enough Gatorade. During my training runs, I always used water for the first 12 miles, then stopped to refill my water and down 20 oz of Gatorade before finishing. I think the little Dixie cups every 3 miles were my undoing. To make it work, I would have had to drink 4 of Gatorade and 4 more of water at every stop. I wasn't doing that - I'm not sure I could have even run had I tried that. I was only taking 2 cups of water until the first cramps appeared, and then I was taking one of water and one of Gatorade. I carried 50 oz of water with me, so maybe next time (if there is a next time), I make a point to down 4 cups of Gatorade at each stop and rely on my carried water for the rest. I could also potentially have my wife meet me at the half way point with a bottle of Gatorade and a way to refill my water. Worth thinking about anyway.

The other option is to stick with half marathons. Or perhaps video games.

That sucks, man. Sounds a little similar to my full marathon experiences--I've never had one where the wheels weren't in full-on fall-of mode by mile 18 or 19.

Sounds familiar to me too. I've only ever run one, and at mile 19 both calves nearly charlyhorsed and it took 4 miles to work it out until I could run again for the last few miles. Often muscle cramps are due to low potassium, but in this case I think it's because I dared stop to drink at rest stop and the cool temps (38 at race start) got me.

My lesson-learned was to not do it again, good luck on your next one!

I've never run farther than 13.1 miles and it sounds like I never will. It would be nice to check it off the list, but I basically always have something better to do. I don't think I have gone more than about 6 miles in one go in the past 30 years or so.

Checking in with my status.
I modified my schedule for the weekends. I run outside with my wife on either Saturday or Sunday instead of doing hills. Our run takes us over the big hill anyway, so I still get some hill training.

I've been using Strava to track my runs. So far I've run 33.3 miles in October and 46 miles since I started in September. I've been getting my 5k pace on the treadmill down to 11:05. Still, the outdoor runs are killing me; I can only go for about 1.5 miles before I stop. But its slowly improving.
