He's a crook and deserves what he gets. But then I see a lot of crooks skating by all of the time. It's sad.
It boils down to disclosure. Madoff didn't tell his investors he was funding them by using monies from other investors.
He won. Period.

I'm not so sure this was the result of altruism. It sounds like they had been pursuing the husband for a while to 'fess up that he knew he was involved in fraudulent activities and to make with the cash reimbursement. He was in talks at the time of his death.
He won. Period.
