Heh. That just spun me off into Big Audio Dynamite 2 - that album was part of the soundtrack to my senior year of high school and the summer following. Haven't thought of it in decades.

Maybe next year, maybe no go

Here is another classic from the Specials:

When they sing:

I always thought it was "mace" which might be even better.

It was on par with the rest of the late-era BAD stuff. Felt like they never got around to making the rest of an album to wrap around the tracks he sent.

I kept seeing Blood Incantation's recent Hidden History of the Human Race album popping up on metal blog's year end "best of" lists. Gave it a spin today...incredible stuff. It's basically a death metal jam album, if such a thing is possible. The album ends with a remarkable 18-minute tune that is mind blowing. Reminds me of a more free-flowing and harder version of Death in their prime.

Lots of really good death metal this year (Gatecreeper, Tomb Mold, Sentient Horror, Strigoi, etc.), but this one will definitely have a place in my 2019 top 10.

The cover is suitable for recent weather.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Still working my way through the Catherine Wheel library and I had no idea Tanya Donelly made an appearance in 1995. Kind of a depressing song given the subject matter, but confusingly upbeat.

The more I use Youtube as a mixer, the more I'm convinced the 90s really were a treasure-trove of music.

As we're coming to the end of 2019, I thought I'd throw out my top 10 albums for the year.

10) Tool - Fear Inoculum. This one tool quite a few listens before it clicked. Once it did, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very different from their other albums and without a "killer song", but enjoyable nonetheless.
BEST SONG: "7empest"

9) Gatecreeper - Deserted. Gnarly, brutal death metal with hooks galore.
BEST SONG: "From the Ashes"

8) Strigoi - Abandon All Faith. I still have no idea why they killed Vallenfyre and created Strigoi, since they're basically the same damn band. Still, more of that is never a bad thing. Adding elements of punk and crust round out a nasty sound, and Greg's roar is as terrifying as ever.
BEST SONG: "Nocturnal Vermin"

7) Stellar Master Elite - Hologram Temple. What you'd get if Skinny Puppy decided to go the death metal route. A great mix of industrial, ambient, and powerful death metal.
BEST SONG: "The Secret of Neverending Chaos"

6) Fvneral Fvkk - Carnal Confessions. Utterly horrible name aside, these guys play a powerful and emotional brand of doom metal with clean vocals. Very similar to Swallow the Sun's clean efforts.
BEST SONG: "The Hallowed Leech"

5) Atlas Pain - Tales of a Pathfinder. This is "Disney Metal" at it's finest. Fun, bouncy, silly, orchestral, and an absolute blast to listen to.
BEST SONG: "The Great Run"

4) Fleshgod Apocalypse - Veleno. FGA's blend of symphony, opera, and utterly insane death metal isn't for everyone, but when it clicks, it clicks big. This album has a couple brilliant tunes and a couple clunkers, but it's awfully good throughout. "Sugar" is a close second on my song of the year list. Side note: Seeing them close out 70K last year with a pillow fight/mosh pit was a fantastic concert moment.
BEST SONG: "Sugar"

3) Idle Hands - Mana. This band is what you get if you throw Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Mission UK, The Smiths, and Tribulation into a blender and hit the "awesome" button. Incredible songwriting, and probably the album I went back to most throughout the year.
BEST SONG: "Mana"

2) Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race. This album has absolutely floored me and is, frankly, taking death metal to places it's never been before. Mixing the musicianship of mid-era Death, the brutality of Gorguts, and the creativeness of Devin Townsend comes out with a mind-blowing musical journey. Definitely a band to watch moving forward.
BEST SONG: "Slave Species to the Gods"

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Wilderun - Veil of Imagination. Every so often, music simply moves you on a level you never expected it could. This is one of those albums. I won't lie, I literally teared up the first time I listened to it because what I was hearing was so beautiful and powerful. While it doesn't quite top their previous effort, this is an album that must be heard to be believed. Absolutely incredible, and I could not possibly recommend it highly enough.
BEST SONG: "Far From Where Dreams Unfurl" (also my song of the year, the first time a song with entirely clean vocals tops that list)

Disappointment of the Year
Amon Amarth - Berserker. I was so excited for this one, and the entire thing just fell completely flat. Whatever magic they captured on their early albums is completely gone. Feels like they're doing nothing but going through the motions at this point.
When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come.

Not sure when I turned away from them. I have tons of their B Sides and singles and appearances on other material. Honey's Dead is the last album I remember clearly but I think I picked up Roller Coaster and Stoned and Dethroned after that but I couldn't tell you a single song off the later and the only stuff i can recall from the former had already been released on other works ("Tower of Song"). I think Automatic was the last work I truly loved.
When Stoned and Dethroned came out The Pogues were my favorite band and JaMC were probably in the top 20. God Help Me was a total surprise and moved JaMC into the top 10. I bought every single I could find off that album and there's a B-side of Ghost of a Smile that also thrilled me.
Another B-side was New York City, now one of favorites in their entire catalog.

Can't remember the a-sides they were on. Come to think of it, I probably listened to the b-sides as much as the album.

Coincidentally, I'm binging on youtube from the next generation of Scottish musicians, Frightened Rabbit, and Scott covers, others covering FR.
