New first person factory builder that appears to be a cross of ARK and Factorio.

Has a bit of an Endless Sky vibe as well, at least the planet exploration aspect.

I was in an alpha test this past weekend and I really liked it. It is a lot more Factorio than Ark in my opinion, more like a first person Factorio game. I didn't go very deep into the test because I was sold based on what I had already seen. It is very obviously influenced by Factorio, but it's a very different experience in first person.

Thanks for the insight. Videos of people actually playing looked like your standard (well, not standard, but typical? It certainly looks cool) survival game. Land alone (or with co-op, or coop, in this case) beat stuff up, harvest their organs, mine resources, build stuff, repeat. I get that there is a factory aspect involved, but early game felt (looked) very ARK/Don't Starve-ish.

Well that sucks. Any reason you can see?

I have the Epic launcher on my computer because I picked up one free game from them, but I'm ready to uninstall since it just seems like it is better to stick with Steam as it is the devil you know.

I keep it around for the free games. I grab all of them that happen by, even the ones I don't like. My taste in games changes with times, and what I despise now may be my favorite genre in the future.

Nope although it may have been broken into or something. I don't own any Epic games so it wouldn't have mattered.

Well I opened up a ticket. I didn't fail the login that much. Hmm, when I googled it I didn't come up with that, my google-fu must be failing :). I also just used my backup email to buy it, so at some point today it'll be done downloading.

New Patch is up (details below). I like the direction it is going so far, but still prefer Factorio for since there is an enemy you need to defend against. My one complaint so far on the UI is my OCD gets the better of me and I get frustrated that I cannot precisely place machines/conveyors (the green line thing doesn't really help me).

I've been trying out the new updates here and there. Seems like they're making good progress and improving with each update, but I'm also waiting until it's done to really dive in.

I finally gave it a go as my son was begging for something for us to play together. We've been playing it basically non-stop since mid-day yesterday, slowly working our way up the tech tree. We're still doing the most basic kind of construction, simple two component assembly. Though we've just opened up the first alloys complicating supply chains.

The 3d terrain makes exploration a lot more challenging than factorio, on the other hand the fauna ignores your structures so you don't have to sweat any of that (they still want YOUR head though).

FortressCraft Evolved was (is?) a riot. Really nailed the exploration side of things.

I've put in more than 300 hours and haven't even gotten to trains yet so I'm good for probably another 1,000 :) I have had good experiences with early access games. I liked Oxygen Not Included in Early Access way more than I liked the finished game. Satisfactory has been great (with the passive mod, I hated the baddies in the game). Factory town has given me over 400 hours. Yes there've been bad ones, but with the Steam refund policy I just refund those and wait til they get in a more playable condition.

I recently picked up Dyson Sphere Program and I enjoyed the experience, although since it is Early Access I'm not going to invest too much time in it right now. I have had Satisfactory on my wishlist but since I liked DSP so much I'm thinking I might pick up Satisfactory for the same experience. I'm wondering how far along Satisfactory is since the last postings about it here several months ago. I know the game was first available in mid-2019 on Epic so there's that, but is it worth putting a lot of time into it right now?

I just completed a second playthrough from scratch and it hasn't changed much since my first playthrough. There is a big update coming in March to flesh out Tier 8. I wouldn't invest a lot of time into it before that. Given that, I think it is pretty worthwhile as long as you understand what you are getting into. It is much more of an exploration game than the others and while it is on one fixed map, that map is massive. I have played to the current end game in two different starting locations and the experiences were very different and the final explored areas barely had any overlap.

This game sounds like something I would really like. I love games that let me build, build, build. But every "Let's Play" video I watch makes this game look incredibly boring, more of a "Line up and build pipes and conveyor belts forever" type game, which is probably one reason I've yet to dive into any of these "Factory" games. I wish someone would make a game like this where you could build all sorts of vehicles, buildings, etc. that have nothing to do with supplying the factory, so there would be a reason to build stuff other than building item x so that you can build item y so that you can build item Z, etc...

At any rate, I may give it a shot next month when the next big update comes out. But right now I'm just going to keep monitoring this thread. :coffee:

Dyson Sphere Program somewhat addresses your concern, even at its early stage of development. You’re assigned to build a Dyson Sphere in your current solar system, but you have to research the tech and that takes a lot of exploring, mining, building and researching. I played a dozen hours and never felt like I was grinding. I am looking forward to the next big update for more things to do.

The exploration aspect of Satisfactory is way beyond what you see in Factorio or Dyson Sphere Program. The 3d environment is so big and so diverse. It's more along the lines of Empyrion, but without the custom vehicles and interplanetary travel, or maybe more comparably Astroneer, without having to worry about breathing and again without the interplanetary travel. Exploration is mostly driven (and enabled) by progressing technologies so you can't really just ignore the tech progression.

Have you tried Empyrion? The tech progression there is much simpler.

Have you considered something like Subnautica? It's less factory building and more build a thing to explore further into the world. The fact that that one is also feature complete and has a surprisingly compelling narrative for this type of game also might make it more appealing.

But every "Let's Play" video I watch makes this game look incredibly boring, more of a "Line up and build pipes and conveyor belts forever" type game, which is probably one reason I've yet to dive into any of these "Factory" games. I wish someone would make a game like this where you could build all sorts of vehicles, buildings, etc. that have nothing to do with supplying the factory, so there would be a reason to build stuff other than building item x so that you can build item y so that you can build item Z, etc...

At any rate, I may give it a shot next month when the next big update comes out. But right now I'm just going to keep monitoring this thread. :coffee:
Have you considered something like Subnautica? It's less factory building and more build a thing to explore further into the world. The fact that that one is also feature complete and has a surprisingly compelling narrative for this type of game also might make it more appealing.
Oh, yeah, I loved Subnautica but I personally don't consider it to be the same type of game. The games I'm referring to are what I call "Factory" games, namely Factorio, Dyson Sphere Program and Satisfactory. After watching a lot of "Let's Play" videos, I think that Satisfactory is going to be the one I would most likely enjoy. Factorio is probably the best of these games, and it has the "blueprint" feature that the other 2 really need. But playing a game where I'm going to be manipulating hundreds of tiny 2D objects is just not going to grab me, I'm afraid. And while Dyson Sphere Program has gotten tons of praise, it has some of the same drawbacks as Factorio and for some reason I just don't like the fact that you're covering entire planets with gigantic factories. It almost looks like too much of a good thing.

On the other hand, Satisfactory is a first-person world where I can really examine and appreciate what I am building. In addition, there's some exploration and the opportunity to build vehicles and lay out rail systems which seems like it would be more fun in a "First Person" setting than in something like Factorio. I had originally decided to wait until it was either on sale again or until the next big update arrived in March, but I may just go ahead and pull the trigger. We'll see... :P

The changes coming in the next update are mainly focused on fleshing out Tier 8, including moving some items from T7 to T8. For your first game it's going to take you a good chunk of time to get into that territory so you can probable spend some time getting used to it and exploring ahead of the update. Just don't go crazy on aluminum or nuclear when you get to T7 as they will be changing. You will have all the transpo options at that stage so you can explore to your hearts content.
