Looks really great Daehawk - is that running with your January 26th mod-list posted above or have you further tweaked? If so, please post your current list. Thanks

Right now Im looking to add a sword mod. I will be mainly a bow user so may look for a good bow too. Not impressed with the bows with crosshairs on them. And finding a good looking weapon mod is tougher than you think because modders like to give them Godly power. I dont want easy mode. I just want a sword and a bow that look good with normal damage. Not decided on longsword or greatsword yet.

The game already seems easy. Wolf takes 2 arrows, guard takes 3 or 4 axe swipes. I remember now this game being WAY too easy is one problem I always had with it.

This looks ok.

Have I forgotten how to bind weps and potions? I thought there was a way to set up weapons and potions so you simply hit a key and equipped them or drank the potions. All Ive found so far is a favorites menu. I favorite the item then when I want to use or equip it I hit a hotkey then have to click the item to equip it. Seems very cumbersome and not very quick at all.

Heres a pic of Camilla as she escorted me to the edge of town to go to the dungeon.

Favorite it, open the favorites menu, mouse over it, and hit your chosen hotkey.

I think. I haven't used the default HUD in ages.

Im considering making it a little more real'ish and hard for me. im about to head to Whiterun and I think when I get there Im going to dump all my armor and weapons and keep only my bow and arrows, the dagger I made in riverwood and the helm I made there as well and go from there. I dont want to wear heavy armor and plan to go medium anyways.

Doesn't Skyrim have only heavy and light? Or is that a mod?

Dont know. Just figured it had all three types. If so then heavy it is. Just seems heavy would make it too easy.

It has three options - heavy, light, and unarmored, although there aren't any unarmored skills. It is assumed that if you're going unarmored, you'll be using protective magic instead.

FWIW, fully upgraded light armor is fantastic. Fast, and still really protective.

This is me right now. Its Geralt's outfit from The Witcher 3. Theres better sets than this of his with the mod but I will have to look high and low for the ore and parts for it. I was only able to make the armor and gloves. Theres much better armor and such including boots and even ad on pieces that look cool. Thats Recorder sitting behind me there at the blacksmith's.

OMG at the details now. Some from mods some from it being the SE version Im sure.

I decided to go back to Helgen to see what was left. In game time it may have been a week. Not long. Last time in the normal game I went back it was full of bandits. Not sure if thats instant or over time because I didn't go back until a LONG time later. But this time no one is here. Its a destroyed town still and empty which is a little strange.

But two thing made me

1. You know how in the prisoner wagon as you enter your fellow captive buddy remarks he used to be sweet on a girl from Helgen and how he mentions she made Meade with juniper berries? Well this time I found bottle of it in the 2nd floor of the ruined inn! Meade made with juniper berries or some such name. So cool. I dont recall that from previous plays.

2. I have my first mod companion with me..Recorder. As Im walking around Helgen with my own crafted helm I hear her say.."Nice hat but I think you're missing some hair" It took me a few moment to realize she just commented on how wearing a helm removes your hair. The game uses helms as hair graphics so if you wear a helm long hair goes poof. I started laughing. I had to tell my wife about it. Of course she had no idea what Im talking about. So cool.

Im only in like a 2 hours of real time play but I am so loving this play through already. On a side note when I went to the first barrow for the stolen claw quest there was no dragon sitting on it like the first time I ever played the game. Was a little sad at that.

Since heavy armor seems to have no penalty I plan to use it ....unless I just dont get hurt. As for weapons I plan to use bow as main and a 2 hand wep as close in...maybe a sword..but who knows.

Now I need to find cool armors for my companions. Make them stand out from each other.

EDIT: Argh still not sure. there are some cool looking light armor mods. Im not using any skill points in either armor until I decide. Also need to find and download a 2h wep and a bow mod for me.

It makes more noise, enough to inhibit stealth, it weighs a ton, it increases how fast you burn through stamina, and it slows down your movement.

Took Lydia, Recorder, Sofia, and Vilja to the tavern. None of them but Lydia could hold their alcohol. The other 3 stumbled around, sang songs, told jokes, and climbed up on the bar and danced. Fun times.

I've been running around with a two handed axe, light armor, and a bow when I remember to switch to it. I thought I'd end up playing a stealth archer (after consciously avoiding it on most runs) but it's been more fun so far to just let them know I'm around so they will come to me. Frost magic, and the associated slow movement, is a pain! When Dawnguard kicks in I'll probably switch to crossbow.

Unlike you I'm running with just a single vanilla companion/hireling (the Unbroken lady). On the other hand I think I have 10 player house mods loaded as I like trying them out. Most of them aren't very convenient without fast travel but a couple of them are winners.

My own playthrough has been paused for a couple of months. I am only running with one companion. I can't imagine ever running with more, and if I'm doing stealth stuff I leave them at the door anyway. I don't care for the vanilla followers. They're all carbon copies with a couple of skills different. They have zero personality, zero story, and you have very little control over them. I'm using Vilja. I didn't install any of the silly sex doll appearances that every companion seems to have, so what I ended up with is a fully voiced Baldur's Gate style NPC with her own personality, story, and banter which is tied to the current location, quest, and my activities. It also gives me full control over her, so I can set her gear up to complement my playstyle (dual wielding with summoning and some archery this time.)

I’m thinking about giving Skyrim another shot, but can’t decide between the PC or Switch versions. The PC has mods to make it look purtier, but the idea of taking Skyrim on a plane with me is awfully appealing.

I currently just have vanilla Skyrim on Steam. For PC, Steam has the “Special Edition”...does that include all the DLC? The DLC doesn’t seem to be sold separately anymore (through Steam, anyways), so I assume it does.

There are two Skyrims on Steam. On is Skyrim, which still has the DLC available. The other is the Special Edition, which is a remaster. It has all the DLC, but less mod support (although it does still have some mods.)

When I search "Skyrim" in Steam, the only thing that comes up is the Special Edition. However, if I go to Skyrim in my games library and hit "Store Page", it takes me to the regular version which has the DLC available for purchse. Weird.

I'm probably leaning towards the Switch version anyways. All the DLC for vanilla would run $45 at this point, and I have a $60 gift card to Gamestop.

Edit: After reading a bit more about the Switch version, it might be a no go. They apparently didn’t adjust the text size, so it’s really small on the handheld. My vision sucks to begin with, so that might be a dealbreaker.

What sort of mod limitations does the Special edition have? It’s $20 right now and includes all the DLC, but if it’s not really mod-able, maybe I’m better off sticking with the vanilla version I already have? So confusing...

I agree about the vanilla companions. I normally don't use them much because, as you mentioned, they are so bland. However until I settle on a player home I tend to have one follow me as a pack mule. Since none of the house mods I'm using is near Riverwood I haven't encountered them yet (I'm mostly staying away from fast travel).

I've tried Vilja, Sofia, and M'rissi. All of them are good in their own ways. I have Vilja active in this run through so I might go pick her up as a companion but I've heard all of her commentary on an earlier game. I really should give Inigo a try as he is the only commonly recommended companion that looks interesting that I haven't used yet.

It is absolutely moddable, and there are some good mods out there for it. The real issue is that the Bethesda modding community largely wrapped up their Skyrim work and had moved on to Fallout 4 before this was released, so a lot of the best content for Skyrim (non-SE) was never updated to work with it. Some other things, especially some third party mod utiltities like SKSE, were either never adapted or are in a near-perpetual 'experimental alpha' state that prevents a lot of other mods that rely on them from being updated.

So it isn't at all unmoddable, it just doesn't have nearly the available content that regular Skyrim has.

Im using 62 mods in SE and one is SKSE. Im doing fine. I could add tons more which are available but I think Im good.

I dont like the vanilla companions...no personality. That said I have always used one and no more as a mod companion but online I see videos of people using many at once so thought Id try it. Downside is they talk at the worst times and they block me in some in doors. If nothing special happens with them sooner rather than later I plan to leave all but one or two at a home I own and travel with just those 1 or 2 for a while then switch out. That way I get to know them plus can do their own quest line. I have done the first dragon quest at Whiterun and plan to buy the home there soon which is also a mod..Breezehome. But I need 5k and only have 2.5k right now. So they all travel with me for now.

With the Olympics over I might have to wrap up my basically yearly Skyrim run. Even without SKSE (which I never bothered to download) there are a tons of mods doing what I want in the SE version. No ENB (I don't see the point), Ordinator and all the other Enai mods except the vampire one, 7 new followers (I don't use more than 1 but I like to keep them all in the load order because I'm lazy), 13 player homes, 9 mods adding new content (from a couple of individual dungeons up to two whole new lands (Beyond Reach and Bruma)), and Morrowloot to unlevel most things. I'm sure I have some conflicts from the vary haphazard way I've added new mods but after LOOT and a bashed patch it seems to mostly work well.

I never see everything but it always feels like a diverse world! I've played six characters for a long while in Skyrim. I've done the Companions once, Thieves once, Main Quest once (although I have started it a couple of times), and have never finished either the College or the Dark Brotherhood or completed either DLC.

I never like the way The Companions are done. its like the game steers you that way and wants you to join. That would be fine but why have the werewolf sub plot? I dont want to be a werewolf.

I rather like the Companions. The hidden werewolf thing is great. I would have hated it if they didn't give you a way out but the creation of a cure and the subsequent choice is, to me, one of the most meaningful choices in a Bethesda guild quest.

Theres a cure? Well that changes it. I like the Companions as a group and interacting with them is fun ...even going hunting with the hottie of the group Aela.....but being able to cure myself changes my hesitance. Do they get mad if you cure it?

BTW, it is a meaningful "choice" for a Bethesda game but don't get you hopes up too high.

So time for me to play this game.

If I install the SE edition, what are the must have mods. Pretty sure my laptop can run everything fine. So yeah, I'm seeing so many lists out there with 100+ mods, it's all very overwhelming.

I can't find a way to copy my mod list easily into a file. On the other hand my list might just be confusing as I have 158 mods running right now.

The big thing I do is use a group of mods that work together to change more or less everything about characters. Some of the changes are big (Ordinator's new perks can really shake things up) and some are small (Imperious is nice but I don't tend to use racial powers anyway).
Ordinator - perk overhaul
Apocalypse - magic overhaul
Wildcat - combat overhaul
Summermyst - enchantment overhaul
Aurora - standing stones overhaul
Thunderchild - shout overhaul
Imperious - race overhaul

If I can find a way to export my whole list I'll annotate it and give some other recomendations.

I've installed water mod and the unofficial patch. I'm thinking the UI one. Should I play the game first as vanilla as I can, just go for every visual mod I like but leave gameplay normal? Recommendations welcomed.

Why play as vanilla installation? Did you get the mod that gives all NPCs random tails? How about the one that provides giant heads to the Argonians? I'd also look into the nude Khajiit mod - it always made me angry to see them wearing pants pants. Don't rule out the mod that adds additional rocks and 37 different flower colors either. I didn't realize how much of the game play was muted until new rock formations were provided.

I'm probably the worst person to ask, but I'm not a fan of mods. I'd recommend playing the game as a completely vanilla install and then either modifying something that's bothering you ("Why can't I carry 10,000lbs of gear in my backpack??!) or replaying the game with modified conditions based on your experiences. I think there's real potential to get obsessed with tweaking things and not actually playing the game. Not naming names here... :D
Maybe next year, maybe no go
